Aim: To report the surgical technique and efficacy of the tiled transplantation internal limiting membrane (ILM) pedicle flap technique after vitrectomy for 33 patients with large macular hole (MH).
Methods: This study was a prospective noncontrolled interventional study. All patients were treated by vitrectomy, the tiled transplantation ILM pedicle flap and gas tamponade. All patients underwent visual acuity measurements and optical coherence tomography (OCT), during preoperative and the follow-up visits postoperative.
Results: Two high-myopic patient had flap dislocation during surgery. The thorough closure of MH following the tiled transplantation ILM pedicle flap technique was ultimately achieved in 31 patients observed by OCT imaging (93.94%) 1wk after surgery. Visual acuity improved from 1.51±0.31 (logMAR) preoperative to 0.92±0.30 6mo after surgery (=0.000). There were no significant changes in OCT finding during the follow-up period from 1mo to 6mo after surgery.
Conclusion: The tiled transplantation ILM pedicle flap technique provides bridge for retinal gliosis to achieve successful closures of the large MHs, and the microenvironment of this technique is more similar to the normal physiological conditions.

Organismal communities associated with coral reefs, particularly invertebrates and microbes, play crucial roles in ecosystem maintenance and coral health. Here, we characterized the organismal composition of a healthy, non-urbanized reef (Site A) and a degraded, urbanized reef (Site B) in the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba, Red Sea to assess its impact on coral health and physiology. Biomimetically designed terracotta tiles were conditioned for 6 months at both sites, then reciprocally transplanted, and scleractinian coral species, Acropora eurystoma and Stylophora pistillata, were attached for an additional 6 months.

Background: To support the COVID-19 pandemic response, many countries, including Belgium, implemented baseline genomic surveillance (BGS) programs aiming to early detect and characterize new SARS-CoV-2 variants. In parallel, Belgium maintained a sentinel network of six hospitals that samples patients with severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and integrated SARS-CoV-2 detection within a broader range of respiratory pathogens. We evaluate the ability of the SARI surveillance to monitor general trends and early signals of viral genetic evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and compare it with the BGS as a reference model.

Background: Sickle cell disease is caused by a defect in the β-globin subunit of adult hemoglobin. Sickle hemoglobin polymerizes under hypoxic conditions, producing deformed red cells that hemolyze and cause vaso-occlusion that results in progressive organ damage and early death. Elevated fetal hemoglobin levels in red cells protect against complications of sickle cell disease.
