This study aims to fabricate a thin film composite (TFC) membrane, modified with copper-aluminium layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanofillers via interfacial polymerization technique for nanofiltration (NF) processes. It was found that Cu-Al LDH nanofillers possessed layered structured materials with typical hexagonal plate-like shape and positive surface charge. The study revealed that TFN membrane exhibits a relatively smooth surface and a less nodular structure compared to pristine TFC membrane. The contact angle of TFN progressively decreased from 54.1° to 37.25°, indicating enhancement in surface hydrophilicity. Moreover, the incorporation of LDH nanofillers resulted in a less negative membrane as compared to the pristine TFC membrane. The best NF performance was achieved by TFN2 membrane with 0.1° of Cu-Al LDH loading and a water flux of 7.01 Lm-2h-1.bar. The addition of Cu-Al LDH resulted in excellent single salt rejections of NaSO (96.8%), MgCl (95.6%), MgSO (95.4%), and NaCl (60.8%). The improvement in anti-fouling properties of resultant TFN membranes can be observed from the increments of pure water flux recovery and normalized water flux by 14% and 25% respectively. The findings indicated that Cu-Al LDH is a promising material in tailoring membrane surface properties and fouling resistance. The modification of the LDH-filled TFN membrane shows another alternative to fabricating a high-performance composite membrane, especially for water softening and partial desalination process.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is attracting widespread attention as a promising strategy for tumor treatment. However, the efficacy of PDT is severely limited by the insufficient tissue penetration depth of the light source and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency. Herein, the metal doping strategy is reported to construct a series of defect-rich M-doped amorphous CoMo-layered double hydroxide (a-M-CoMo-LDH, M = Mn, Cu, Al, Ni, Mg, Zn) photosensitizers (PSs) for NIR-II PDT.

The novel Zn-Cu-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) encapsulated within a chitosan/glutaraldehyde matrix, designated as LDH@Cs/G@Pd, was synthesized through simplified methodologies for the preparation of aromatic aldehyde derivatives. Formic acid served as the carbon monoxide source and hydrogen donor, while chitosan/glutaraldehyde acted as the linking agent between the substrate and palladium nanoparticles, with Echinophora platyloba extract functioning as the reducing agent for palladium. The characterization of LDH@Cs/G@Pd was conducted using a variety of analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

Manganese oxide is a potential agent in the field of energy storage owing to its changeable redox characteristics, high theoretical specific capacitance and valence shells for charge transfer. On the other hand, due to huge surface area, affordability, customisable composition, layered structure and high theoretical specific capacitance, layered double hydroxides, or LDHs, have drawn a lot of interest. This study employs a three-electrode setup to investigate the supercapacitive performance of λ-manganese dioxide/Cu-Al LDH composite at different compositional ratios.

Article Synopsis
  • The accumulation of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide and methane, leads to global warming, prompting international efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5 °C.
  • Researchers synthesized copper-aluminium layered double hydroxide (Cu-Al LDH) catalysts using urea hydrolysis and microwave irradiation, optimizing conditions like MW power and urea concentration.
  • The resulting catalysts demonstrated high efficiency in converting greenhouse gases like carbon monoxide and methane into valuable products, achieving significant conversion rates and maintaining stability over multiple cycles.
