Calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Ca-Na2EDTA; Versenate) was more effective than thiamine (vitamin B1) in enhancing the urinary excretion of lead, reducing tissue lead and restoring lead induced biochemical alterations in rats. However, the combination of CaNa2EDTA and vitamin B1 enhanced the beneficial effect of CaNa2EDTA in lead intoxication and was particularly effective in reducing the brain concentration of lead.

Objective: To evaluate avian patients presented to a wildlife rehabilitation facility with confirmed lead toxicity for clinical signs associated with blood lead level groups, efficacy of subcutaneous chelation therapy with calcium disodium EDTA, and case outcome based on presenting blood lead levels.
Methods: A retrospective record review of 95 avian cases representing 19 species treated for lead toxicosis from a wildlife rehabilitation center in Wisconsin between 2014 and 2023 was conducted. Data were evaluated for presenting complaints, clinical signs, radiographic findings, chelation therapy protocol, clinical pathology data, and case outcome.

New insights on the self-assembling process of diphenylalanine (FF) into nanostructures in view of its application as an alternative nanomaterial for bioanalytical and biomedical systems are presented in the frame of the present work. Experimental conditions, such as peptide concentration and solubilization medium pH, were explored to understand the hierarchical process involved in the formation of self-assembled nanostructures arising from the simple and short diphenylalanine peptide. Optical microscopic and TEM images supported by DLS data authenticated the hierarchical self-assembly outcoming from the original nature of the first nanostructures, showing individual nanotubes and vesicles stacking to grow well-defined microtubes.

Background: Lead encephalopathy, while thankfully rare, is a devastating and potentially fatal consequence of lead intoxication. Owing to successful public health measures, severe lead toxicity is not often encountered by most practicing physicians in the United States, making both its recognition and management challenging. A case study of a 4-year-old female presenting in refractory status epilepticus, found to have severe microcytic anemia and lead level > 100 mcg/dL.

Lead poisoning in children has the potential for devastating neurodevelopmental consequences. There is significant socioeconomic disparity in children with lead poisoning. Specific lead chelation regimens have been approved for children by the US Food and Drug Administration, however in the United States, there has been a recent national shortage of the primary therapy, edetate calcium disodium (CaNa2 EDTA).
