Airag, a fermented mare's milk in Mongolia, exhibits diverse flavors and microbiota due to distinct production processes and environments in nomadic households. Recently, there has been a shift from the traditional cow skin container, 'khokhuur', to a plastic container for airag production, potentially impacting the microbiota and quality. To address this notion, we aimed to elucidate the differences in the microbiota between airag samples from a plastic container and those from a khokhuur.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRetinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are ocular disorders in which a loss of retinal vasculature leads to ischemia followed by a compensatory neovascularization response. In mice, this is modeled using oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR), whereby neonatal animals are transiently housed under hyperoxic conditions that result in central retina vessel regression and subsequent neovascularization. Using endothelial cell (EC)-specific gene deletion, we found that loss of two ETS-family transcription factors, ERG and FLI1, led to regression of OIR-induced neovascular vessels but failed to improve visual function, suggesting that relevant retinal damage occurs prior to and independently of neovascularization.

The pectoralis muscle in birds is important for flight and thermogenesis. In migratory songbirds this muscle exhibits seasonal flexibility in size, but whether this flexibility reflects changes in muscle fiber type has not been well documented. We investigated how seasonal changes in photoperiod affected pectoralis muscle fiber type and metabolic enzymes, comparing among three closely-related sparrow species: two seasonal migrants and one year-round, temperate climate resident.

Devices commonly used in the home environment with the potential to cause a MDRPI include but are not limited to nasogastric tubes, feeding tubes, nasal cannulas, nasal cannula prongs, airway pressure masks, indwelling urinary catheters, sequential compression devices, dressings, bandages, and tracheostomies. When a medical device is used for an extended period, it can lead to unrelieved pressure or edema, cause friction and/or shearing that impairs sensation, reduces circulation, and alters the microclimate.
