In this report, we have described a FeCl3-catalyzed process involving intramolecular annulation of o-phenoxy diarylacetylenes via hydroarylation to afford a series of biologically potent fused seven-membered (6-7-6) ring compounds under mild reaction conditions. This reaction was believed to proceed through Friedel-Crafts type sequential carbometallation followed by protonation to produce phenyldibenz[b,f]oxepines. This method was also extended to synthesize seven-membered rings that are fused with coumarins.

A novel radical 1,2-formylfunctionalization of alkenes involving 1,2(4,5)-formyl migration triggered by addition of various carbon- and heteroatom-centered radicals to alkenes has been developed for the first time, thus providing straightforward access to diverse β-functionalized aldehydes with good efficiency, remarkable selectivity, and excellent functional group tolerance. Analogous transformations mediated by a keto-carbonyl migration have also been effected under similar conditions. This method was used to access ring systems including various benzannulated nine-, ten-, and eleven-membered rings, complex 6-5(6,7)-6(5) fused rings, and bridged rings with diverse functionalities.

Background: Haemodiafiltration (HDF) may improve survival of chronic dialysis patients. This prospective, multicentre randomized cross-over study evaluated the effects of long-term on-line HDF on the levels of solutes of different molecular weight markers or causative agents of the most common metabolic derangements in uraemia.
Methods: Sixty-nine patients from eight Italian centres were randomly assigned to two 6-month treatment sequences: A-B and B-A [A, low-flux haemodialysis (HD) and B, on-line HDF].
