Published: July 2020

A new pyrrolidine alkaloid, acanthophoraine A (), along with six known alkaloids (-), had been isolated from the red alga . The structures of these compounds were identified by spectroscopic analyses. The absolute configuration of was established by ECD calculation. Compound represents the first example of -isobutyl pyrrolidone with an urea arm. The antimicrobial activity of was also evaluated.[Figure: see text].

Objectives: Smoking is considered a major risk factor for periodontitis genesis and progression. In clinical studies, specific indicators have been used to characterize the smoking status of the patient as the number of cigarettes consumed (NCC), the pack-years (PY), or Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). However, available literature is missing on the relationship between cotinine gingival intoxication and smoking indicators.

Department of Biobehavioral Health, Penn State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA.

Cigarette smoking is at an all-time low. However, nicotine consumption has diversified with the introduction of commercial tobacco products that include Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems. Nicotine is the main psychoactive component of tobacco and contributes to the addictive properties of tobacco products.

Fluidic Membrane-Bound Protocells Enabling Versatile Assembly of Functional Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications.

The development of membrane-bound protocells, which process cascade biochemical reactions in distinct microcompartments, marks a significant advancement in soft systems. However, many synthesized protocells with cell membrane-like structures are prone to rupturing in biological environments and are challenging to functionalize, limiting their biomedical applications. In this study, we explore the liquid-liquid phase separation of tannic acid (TA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form coacervate droplets.

This study investigated the valorization of leaves by producing a low-caffeine, antioxidant-rich product through the supercritical antisolvent extraction (SAE) process. The objective was to concentrate the antioxidants while selectively reducing the caffeine. The SAE treatments were conducted using an ethanolic extract of guayusa leaves under varying pressure (80 bar-150 bar) and temperature (35-45 °C) conditions to improve the recovery of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and caffeine fractionation.

Plasma nicotine and its metabolite as biomarkers of tobacco exposure and their relevance to pulmonary nodule.

Biomark Med

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Anhui Medical University, No. 81 Meishan Road, Shushan Districts, Hefei, Anhui, 230032, China.

Explore the optimal cut-off values for plasma nicotine and its metabolites in assessing smoking status and quantify the association between individual tobacco exposure and pulmonary nodules (PNs). A total of 2245 plasma samples were included for the determination of nicotine (Nic), cotinine (Cot) and -3'-hydroxycotinine (OHCot) concentrations. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal biomarkers reflecting smoking status.
