Astigmatism is the most frequent refractive error worldwide followed by hyperopia and myopia. Internal astigmatism has to be differentiated from external astigmatism. Furthermore, external astigmatism can be divided into "with the rule", "against the rule" and "oblique". The summation of internal and external astigmatism results in the refractive cylinder. Astigmatism has for a long time been regarded as a two-dimensional phenomenon; however, only a three-dimensional consideration expanded the view on existing analytical methods (topography and tomography). Alpins' vector analysis is a commonly used method for treatment planning. Multiple options exist for treatment of astigmatism with conservative approaches, such as eyeglasses or toric contact lenses as well as various surgical procedures, such as photorefractive keratectomy, femtosecond laser-assisted keratotomy, laser in-situ keratomileusis, small incision lenticule extraction and toric intraocular lens implantation.

Background: Baraitser-Winter syndrome (BWS) is rare, and no previous reports have described the visual course of patients with this condition. Herein, we report the long-term visual outcomes and ocular features of a 6-year-old patient diagnosed with BWS.
Case Presentation: A 6-year-old female patient visited our clinic complaining of low vision.
A compact Nd:YVO/Cr:YAG passively Q-switched laser in a near-hemispherical resonator is exploited to realize high-peak-power pulsed beams with high spatial degrees of freedom. Beneficial from the advantages of strong intracavity beam focusing as well as the point-like excitation condition for the proposed cavity design, various high-order structured pulses as coherent superpositions of multiple degenerate eigenmodes are stably generated under different off-axis pump schemes. Besides, by employing external-cavity astigmatic mode conversion (AMC), the oval-shaped and chessboard-like structured pulses under on-axis and 1D off-axis pumping are transformed into exotic modes with polygonal and figure-eight-shaped envelopes to further enrich the spatial complexity of the generated fields.

To improve access to vision care and to enable mass vision screening, a smartphone app has been developed to measure refractive errors. Without needing any external attachment, the app running on a standalone phone can be used by lay personnel to measure subjective refraction. Its validity has been pilot-tested in clinical settings and underserved communities.
