Although high-intensity statins are recommended for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, evidence has shown that Asians may need lower dose statins to achieve similar effect when compared to Caucasians. Moreover, awareness of adverse effects leads physicians to initiate moderate-intensity statins. Comparative of high versus moderate-intensive statins on LDL-C among patients who had undergone primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are less established in Thailand. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to identify pattern of statins prescribing and explored the effectiveness on lipid profiles, including LDL-C goal achievement (<70 mg/dL) in STEMI patients underwent PPCI. A total of 983 patients with STEMI who had undergone PPCI were identified during 2005-2015. At 3-month follow-up, 31.9% patients were investigated for their lipid profile. There was 26.11% of patients who received high-intensity statins. When compared to baseline, we found more LDL-C reduction (38.22% ± 26.75% vs 22.36% ± 35.05%, < .01) in the high-intensity group. Eighty-one patients achieved the target LDL-C, the high-intensity group were able to achieve the LDL-C goal than moderate-intensity group, but did not reach statistical significance (24.1% vs 30.5%, = .26). This study confirmed that high-intensity statins have superior for LDL-C reduction and tend to achieve LDL-C goal more than moderate-intensity statins.

Association between estrogen and kidney function: population based evidence and mutual bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Clin Exp Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Background: Previous studies have suggested a potential role of estrogen in the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the association and causality between estrogen and kidney function remain unclear.

Methods: The cross-sectional correlation between serum estradiol concentration and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was analyzed using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016. Causality was tested using mutual bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches based on six large-scale GWAS studies.

The effectiveness and safety of combining anlotinib with gemcitabine and cisplatin in the first-line treatment of recurrent/metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (R/M NPC) have not been definitively established. This research seeks to investigate the potential benefits and risks of utilizing this combination therapy in the first-line management of R/M NPC. The research involved 22 individuals diagnosed with R/M NPC and who had not undergone any previous treatment.

Introduction: Young-onset neurocognitive symptoms result from a heterogeneous group of neurological and psychiatric disorders which present a diagnostic challenge. To identify such factors, we analysed the Biomarkers in Younger-Onset Neurocognitive Disorders cohort, a study of individuals <65 years old presenting with neurocognitive symptoms for a diagnosis and who have undergone cognitive and biomarker analyses.

Methods: Sixty-five participants (median age at assessment of 56 years, 45% female) were recruited during their index presentation to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuropsychiatry Centre, a tertiary specialist service in Melbourne, Australia, and categorized as either early-onset Alzheimer's disease ( = 18), non-Alzheimer's disease neurodegeneration ( = 23) or primary psychiatric disorders ( = 24).

Background: Aspirin is a simple, globally available medication that has been shown to reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of aspirin in the secondary prevention of colorectal cancer.

Methods: This phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at 66 centres across 11 countries and territories (ten in Asia-Pacific; one in the Middle East).

Background: Reoperation is a major adverse event following surgical treatment but has yet to be used as a primary outcome measure in population studies to assess current treatments for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The purpose of the present study was to explore the risk factors associated with reoperations following procedures under anesthesia ("operations") for DDH in patients between the ages of 1 and 3.00 years, with the goal of deriving treatment recommendations.
