Luminescent phosphorene quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as fascinating nanomaterials for potential applications in optoelectronics, catalysis, and sensing. Herein, we investigate the structural distortion of black phosphorus (BP) under an applied electric field to yield blue luminescent PQDs [average diameter 8 ± 1.5 nm ( N = 60)]. The electrosynthesized PQDs exhibit photoluminescence emission independent of excitation wavelength with 84% quantum efficiency. Structural distortion that occurred during the transformation of BP to PQDs is confirmed by results obtained during transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Further, using first-principles-based density functional theory, calculations on oxygenated and nonoxygenated PQDs augment the experimental observations that an optimum oxygen content maintains the structural integrity of PQDs, above which the structural robustness of PQDs is drastically diminished.

Face recognition from 2D images is influenced by various factors, including lighting conditions, viewing direction, rotation, and polarity inversion. It has been proposed that these techniques affect face recognition by distorting shape from shading. This study investigates the perception of 3D face shape in 2D images using a gauge figure task.

Carboncones and fullerenes are exemplary π-conjugated carbon nanomaterials with unsaturated, positively curved surfaces, enabling the attachment of atoms or functional groups to enhance their physicochemical properties. However, predicting and understanding the addition patterns in functionalized carboncones and fullerenes are extremely challenging due to the formidable complexity of the regioselectivity exhibited in the adducts. Existing predictive models fall short in systems where the carbon molecular framework undergoes severe distortion upon high degrees of addition.

Photocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for sustainable energy systems yet lacks high-performance catalysts capable of strong visible light absorption, robust charge dynamics, fast reaction kinetics, and high oxidation capability. Herein, we report the multiscale optimization of carbon nitride through the construction of porous curled carbon nitride nanosheets (CNA-B30) incorporating boron center/cyano group Lewis acid-base pairs (LABPs). The unique chemical and structural features of CNA-B30 extended the photoabsorption edges of π → π* and n → π* electronic transitions to 470 nm and 715 nm, respectively.

Three 1-(anthracene-9-ylmethyl)-3-isopropyl-imidazol-2-thione Zn(II) halide complexes (1-3) and one 1-(anthracene-9-ylmethyl)-3-isopropyl-imidazol-2-selone Zn(II) dichloride complex (4) were synthesized and characterized. Complexes 2, 3, and 4 exhibited distorted tetrahedral geometries, while complex 1 adopted a regular tetrahedral geometry. All these complexes displayed emission in the crystalline state, with complex 3 emitting in the yellow region and complex 1 and 4 in the blue region, while complex 2 gave a bluish-green emission.

The computational modeling of category learning is typically evaluated in terms of the model's accuracy. For a model to accurately infer category membership of stimuli, it has to have sufficient representational precision. Thus, many category learning models infer category representations that guide decision-making and the model's fitness is evaluated by its ability to accurately choose.
