Listeriosis is a sporadic infectious disease, which affects high-risk populations, such as the elderly, pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised patients. During pregnancy, listeriosis usually presents like a mild non-specific infection, but it may be responsible for fetal loss, preterm labor, early onset neonatal sepsis, and neonatal death. We report the case of a late stillbirth secondary to maternal chorioamnionitis. was isolated from the amniotic fluid and the fetal pleural fluid. The fetal autopsy revealed a disseminated inflammatory response with multi-organ involvement. This case illustrates the importance of the prevention and the diagnosis of listeriosis during gestation and may help us to understand the physiopathology of fetal loss due to listeriosis.

Late antenatal care booking and associated factors among pregnant women in Ethiopia: evidence from 2019 performance monitoring for action data analysis.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

Introduction: Pregnancy is a crucial period for a woman, her family, and society. Early initiation of antenatal care (ANC) follow-up helps to identify pre-existing health conditions and complications arising during pregnancy. It also allows the mother to receive health promotion and disease prevention services.

Farrowing durations that exceed 240 min cause stillborn rates to increase. Therefore, feeding strategies in late gestation have been studied to mitigate the negative consequences of extended farrowing durations. A total of 1,501 sows (PIC 1050 Camborough) were used for this study at two individual farms near Carthage, IL.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal dietary supplementation with chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) during late gestation and lactation significantly reduced stillbirths and mummies in piglets, indicating improved productivity for sows.
  • - Analysis showed that COS supplementation enhanced the expression of key mRNAs in the placenta of IUGR piglets, pointing to better placental function and reduced oxidative stress.
  • - Additionally, the intestinal health of IUGR piglets from COS sows improved, evidenced by increased mRNA and protein levels in the jejunum, suggesting better immune status and overall growth potential.

Group B streptococcal infections in pregnancy and early life.

Clin Microbiol Rev

November 2024

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA.

SUMMARYBacterial infections with Group B (GBS) are an important cause of adverse outcomes in pregnant individuals, neonates, and infants. GBS is a common commensal in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts and can be detected in the vagina of approximately 20% of women globally. GBS can infect the fetus either during pregnancy or vaginal delivery resulting in preterm birth, stillbirth, or early-onset neonatal disease (EOD) in the first week of life.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to find the best time for labor induction in normotensive singleton pregnancies to reduce risks like stillbirth, analyzing 70,293 births in Iceland from 1997 to 2018 while excluding high-risk cases.
  • - Results showed that inducing labor at or after 40 weeks decreased cesarean rates without increasing adverse outcomes, while earlier inductions did not show significant benefits.
  • - The conclusion emphasized that inducing labor post-40 weeks is safer for women without heightening risks for mothers or babies, and earlier induction in low-risk pregnancies isn’t beneficial.
