Methotrexate (MTX) is an antifolic agent used in the first line of anti-inflammatory disease treatment and some oncologic issues. The metabolism of MTX is rapid, and the MTX concentration in the blood is not significant 24 h after administration. Unlike this, methotrexate polyglutamates (MTXPGs) can be informative biomarkers of drug exposure.

Thus, a correctly repeated blood sample should show lower potassium levels than a haemolysed one. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of haemolysed samples with potassium levels below the reference range and whether this predicts hypokalemia in repeated collections.

Background: Grossly lipaemic samples are a significant cause of analytical errors, potentially impacting patient care. The causes of lipaemia are varied and often unavoidable, while methods to reduce lipaemia through gold-standard ultracentrifugation are limited by availability, transportation and cost. Benchtop centrifugation has been proposed as an alternative method to reduce lipaemia.

Objectives: Urinalysis is widely used and is also frequently requested in emergency situations for screening hypovolemia, urinary tract infections, diabetes, ketoacidosis and hematuria. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of reporting urinary sediment in emergency department specimens with the Sysmex UN system.
Methods: We evaluated urinalyses requested by the emergency department over a three-month period and examined red blood cell count interference, compared leukocyte esterase dipsticks to cytofluorimetric leukocyte count and nitrites to cytofluorimetric bacterial count.
