A new type of tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz (THz) source has been demonstrated, which is based on a LiNbOplane-parallel slab with an echelon structure on its input surface. Single-cycle pulses of 1 μJ energy and 0.30 THz central frequency have been generated with 5×10 efficiency from such a source. One order-of-magnitude increase in efficiency is expected by pumping a cryogenically cooled echelon of increased size and thickness with a Ti:sapphire laser. The use of a plane-parallel nonlinear optical crystal slab enables straightforward scaling to high THz pulse energies and the production of a symmetric THz beam with a uniform pulse shape for good focusability and high field strength.

We present the highest, to the best of our knowledge, average power from a laser-driven single-cycle THz source demonstrated so far, using optical rectification in the tilted pulse front geometry in cryogenically cooled lithium niobate, pumped by a commercially available 500 W ultrafast thin-disk ytterbium (Yb) amplifier. We study repetition rate-dependent effects in our setup at 100 and 40 kHz at this high average power, revealing different optimal fluence conditions for efficient conversion. The demonstrated sources with multi-100 mW average power at these high repetition rates combine high THz pulse energies and high repetition rate and are thus ideally suited for nonlinear THz spectroscopy experiments with significantly reduced measurement times.

A new type of terahertz source containing only two optical elements - a volume phase holographic grating, and a semiconductor nonlinear slab - is proposed. The setup does not require any microstructuring, has only one diffraction order, and can be scaled to large pump sizes without any principal limitations. Furthermore, it can be easily adapted to different pump wavelengths and THz phase-matching frequencies.

Optical rectification (OR) is a popular way to generate coherent terahertz radiation. Here, we develop a sub-picosecond mid-infrared (mid-IR) light source with a tailored wavelength and pulse duration for enhancing the OR efficiency. Numerical simulations for a LiNbO-based OR with tilted pulse-front excitation are first conducted to determine the optimal parameters of pump wavelength and pulse duration, demonstrating that the OR efficiency pumped by 4-µm sub-picosecond (0.

Optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses has emerged as the dominant technique for generating single- and few-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses. The advent of the tilted pulse front pumping (TPFP) velocity matching technique, proposed and implemented two decades ago, has ushered in significant advancements of these THz sources, which are pivotal in the realm of THz pump-probe and material control experiments, which need THz pulses with microjoule energies and several hundred kV/cm electric field strengths. Furthermore, these THz sources are poised to play a crucial role in the realization of THz-driven particle accelerators, necessitating millijoule-level pulses with tens of MV/cm electric field strengths.

We successfully demonstrated the generation of single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses through tilted-pulse-front (TPF) pumping using a reflective echelon in a lithium niobate crystal. By optimizing the pump pulse duration using a chirp, we achieved a maximum pump-to-THz conversion efficiency of 0.39%.
