Characterizing Stream Condition with Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Southeastern Minnesota, USA: Agriculture, Channelization, and Karst Geology Impact Lotic Habitats and Communities.

Insects

January 2025

Program in Ecology and Environmental Science and Large River Studies Center, Department of Biology, Winona State University, Winona, MN 55987, USA.

Prior to implementing watershed-wide projects to reduce the impacts of agriculture on regional streams and rivers, stream habitats and benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were assessed at 15 sites on the South Branch Root River and its major tributaries in southeastern Minnesota, USA. Triplicate kick-net samples were collected from each site during three time periods (1998, 1999, 2006/2008) and stream habitats were inventoried within 150 m long sections at each site. In total, 26,760 invertebrates representing 84 taxa were collected and used to rate stream sites using a regional multi-metric benthic index of biotic integrity (BIBI).

Piloting a minimum data set for older people living in care homes in England: a developmental study.

Age Ageing

January 2025

Centre for Research in Public Health and Community Care (CRIPACC), University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, Hatfield, UK.

Background: We developed a prototype minimum data set (MDS) for English care homes, assessing feasibility of extracting data directly from digital care records (DCRs) with linkage to health and social care data.

Methods: Through stakeholder development workshops, literature reviews, surveys and public consultation, we developed an aspirational MDS. We identified ways to extract this from existing sources, including DCRs and routine health and social care datasets.

Background: The magnitude of inbreeding depression depends on the recessive burden of the individual, which can be traced back to the hidden (recessive) inbreeding load among ancestors. However, these ancestors carry different alleles at potentially deleterious loci and therefore there is individual variability of this inbreeding load. Estimation of the additive genetic value for inbreeding load is possible using a decomposition of inbreeding in partial inbreeding components due to ancestors.

Malignant neoplasm of the breast was the fifth leading cause of death among women in Germany in 2020. To improve early detection, nationwide breast cancer screening (BCS) programmes for women 50-69 have been implemented since 2005. However, Germany has not reached the European benchmark of 70% participation, and socio-demographic inequalities persist.

Methylcellulose enhances resolution in gravitational field-flow fractionation: Going beyond viscosity.

J Chromatogr A

January 2025

Department "Area Materno-Infantile" Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan Italy.

Gravitational Field-Flow Fractionation (GrFFF) is an elution-based method designed for the separation of particles ranging from a few micrometers up to approximately 100 μm in diameter. Separation occurs over time, with particles being fractionated based on size and other physico-chemical properties. GrFFF takes advantage of gravitational forces acting perpendicularly to a laminar flow in a thin channel.
