Article Abstract

Formalin is commonly used as a component of antiparasitic baths in fisheries. In this study the impact of this bath on the immune profile and oxidative stress parameters was evaluated. A formalin bath was prepared in the concentration of 185.3 mg L (0.17 mL L) at a temperature of 20 °C. A total of 96 common carp Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758) individuals were immersed in this bath for 60 min. The effects were monitored immediately, and then after 24, 48 h and 10 days following the treatment. The study revealed the most effects 10 days after the treatment, when we observed the decrease of lysozyme in skin mucus, the decrease of anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta in gill tissue and increase of interleukin 10 in cranial kidney tissue. The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 1b showed an increase in gill tissue immediately after the bath and the increase in glutathione peroxidase in gill tissue was also observed 24 h and 10 days after bath treatment. The other investigated parameters did not show any significant changes. In conclusion, even though the formalin bath elevated some parameters as mentioned above, formalin used in the bath is probably safe as an antiparasitic treatment of fish.

Unlike other microbothriid monogenean infections in elasmobranchs, limited information is available on the biology and treatment of . As parasitic infection with was found in 21 juvenile blacktip reef sharks () at the Lotteworld aquarium in Seoul, South Korea, we aimed to investigate the anatomical features and treatment protocols for in this study. The parasites were sampled and fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin, and examined using light and scanning electron microscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional Chinese medicine, specifically astilbin, is studied for its effectiveness in managing pain, focusing on its active components and methods of action.
  • Experiments using neuropathic rat models demonstrated that both systemic and spinal delivery of astilbin significantly reduced both chronic and acute pain behaviors, with specific effective dosing identified.
  • The study highlighted that astilbin works by influencing neuronal metabolic processes and modulating excitatory synaptic activity, leading to its pain-relieving effects.

Methanol poisoning can occur through consumption of methanol-containing alcohols, especially in areas where production, distribution, sale and consumption of alcohol is lawfully prohibited. Due to its toxic potency, determination of methanol in alcoholic solutions is important. The aim of the present study was to develop a rapid, simple and inexpensive method for quantification of methanol in alcoholic solutions that uses minimal equipment available in most laboratories.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of a new hoof care product containing iron, zinc, and aluminum salts for reducing Digital Dermatitis (DD) in dairy cows, compared to traditional treatments like formalin and copper sulfate, which have questionable efficacy and may cause irritation and environmental harm.
  • - Over a year-long clinical trial involving 132 cows, the treatment group received bi-weekly applications of the product on one hind foot, while the control group only had the other hind foot washed, with monthly assessments of DD severity.
  • - Results indicated the treatment group had significantly less disease severity, with the control group showing a 4 times higher likelihood of having lesions and a nearly 6 times higher chance of active lesions compared to the treatment group.
