Proteoglycans in Mechanobiology of Tissues and Organs: Normal Functions and Mechanopathology.

Proteoglycan Res

Proteoglycans (PGs) are a diverse class of glycoconjugates that serve critical functions in normal mechanobiology and mechanopathology. Both the protein cores and attached glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains function in mechanically-sensitive processes, and loss of either can contribute to development of pathological conditions. PGs function as key components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) where they can serve as mechanosensors in mechanosensitive tissues including bone, cartilage, tendon, blood vessels and soft organs.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of PIEZO2, a mechanotransducer, in bladder function and its possible link to lower urinary tract dysfunction in men with bladder outlet obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • - Researchers analyzed bladder wall samples from men undergoing prostate surgery and found that PIEZO2 expression was lower in those with BPH, especially in patients experiencing urinary retention.
  • - The results suggest that reduced PIEZO2 expression may contribute to bladder dysfunction in BPH patients, indicating a need for further research into its therapeutic potential.

In this study, we have designed a novel 1D-0D lead-free Z-scheme heterostructure of BiFeO-ZnS (BFO/ZnS) using an isoelectric point-assistant annealing method for piezocatalytic reactions. The open circuit voltage measurements exhibited a greater internal electric field for BFO/ZnS (90/10) than for individual components, causing its excellent piezocatalytic performance for MTZ antibiotics, organic dyes oxidation, and Cr(VI) reduction. BFO/ZnS (90/10) was treated by corona poling to boost its polarization, resulting in the highest remanent polarization and dielectric constant.

Piezo proteins have been identified as mechanosensitive ion channels involved in mechanotransduction. Several ion channel dysfunctions may be associated with diseases (including deafness and pain); thus, studying them is critical to understand their role in mechanosensitive disorders and to establish new therapeutic strategies. The current study investigated for the first time the expression patterns of Piezo proteins in zebrafish octavolateralis mechanosensory organs.

Mechanosensitive ion channels in glaucoma pathophysiology.

Vision Res

Spencer Center for Vision Research, Byers Eye Institute, Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Force sensing is a fundamental ability that allows cells and organisms to interact with their physical environment. The eye is constantly subjected to mechanical forces such as blinking and eye movements. Furthermore, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) can cause mechanical strain at the optic nerve head, resulting in retinal ganglion cell death (RGC) in glaucoma.
