Gangue, produced from coal mining and washing process, is a serious threat to the ground environment. Gangue backfilling mining method can solve this problem and reduce mining-induced hazards, e.g., controlling surface subsidence and preventing water inrush from seeping into goaf by cracks in overlying strata. In this paper, effects of the original particle size distribution (PSD) and water content on the particle crushing behavior and seepage properties of granular gangues were investigated. Experimental results show that the crushing behavior can promote the compaction of gangue particles; the variation of PSD after crushing reveals distinct fractal characteristics. With the increasing compression stress, the particle crushing ratio and fractal dimension increase, while the permeability decreases. Due to the rearrangement of particles and newly generated fine particles filled the gap among larger particles, it is difficult to reduce the permeability by increasing the compressive stress. In addition, the variation of fractal dimensions is similar to the crushing ratio, so the particle crushing can be illustrated by fractal dimensions. The relationship between porosity and permeability established by the Kozeny-Carman equation can model the effect of particle crushing in this research. The reliability of the equation is verified by the comparison of model result and experimental data. To increase the mitigation rate of mining-induced hazards and environmental pollution by GBM method, granular gangues can be crushed into smaller particles and dehydrated before backfilling.

Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has attracted worldwide attention to ensure sustainability of electric vehicle industry. Pretreatment as an essential step for recycling of spent LIBs is critical to ensure the recovery efficiency and quality of black mass which is used for further materials regeneration. Usually, high temperature pyrolysis, at around 600 °C is required during the pretreatment to achieve effective separation of the black mass that is binding on aluminium foils with polyvinylidene fluoride binder.

Oxycodone hydrochloride (HCl) extended release (ER) tablet is an abuse-deterrent formulation that uses a physical barrier to make it more difficult to crush tablets prior to abuse via various routes. A previously conducted in vivo pharmacokinetics (PK) study showed that particle size exhibited significant effects on PK. Here, a computational modeling study using a novel combined computational fluid dynamics and physiologically based PK model was applied to better understand the mechanisms that produce differences in PK according to particle size and formulation type for nasally insufflated oxycodone HCl immediate release (IR) and ER ts.

Cement-bonded particle boards are gaining popularity globally due to their durability, strength, and, more importantly, environmental sustainability. The increasing demand for these materials has also created the necessity for the sustainable recycling of these materials. In this study, the potential to recycle wood-wool cement board (WWCB) waste into new lightweight insulation biocomposite material was examined.

The morphology of an individual particulate refers to its shape characteristics and size properties, which both play important roles for granular matter in physics, mechanics, chemistry, and biology. In this study, ellipsoidality is defined as a 3D shape index for evaluating particle roundness, and an explicit calculation method is applied. The dependences of 3D shape characteristics (aspect ratios, sphericity, and ellipsoidal degree) on particle size (ranges from 0.

A recent study reported the rapid growth of SiC single crystals of ~1.5 mm/h using high-purity SiC sources obtained by recycling CVD-SiC blocks used as materials in semiconductor processes. This method has gained attention as a way to improve the productivity of the physical vapor transport (PVT) method, widely used for manufacturing single crystal substrates for power semiconductors.
