Nose-to-brain delivery of lithium via a sprayable in situ-forming hydrogel composed of chelating starch nanoparticles.

J Control Release

December 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street, West Hamilton, ON L8S 4L8, Canada. Electronic address:

While bipolar disorder patients can benefit from lithium therapy, high levels of lithium in the serum can induce undesirable systemic side effects. Intranasal (IN) lithium delivery offers a potential solution to this challenge given its potential to facilitate improved lithium transport to brain when delivered to the olfactory mucosa. Herein, a sprayable, in situ forming nanoparticle network hydrogel (NNH) based on Schiff base interactions between chelator-functionalized oxidized starch nanoparticles (SNPs) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) is reported that can be deployed within the nasal cavity to release ultra-small penetrative SNPs over time.

Endodontically treated teeth with compromised coronal tooth structure often require core build-ups with the support of radicular posts. In certain cases, the traditional post and core approach may not be possible due to various anatomical and clinical contraindications. Such cases require more meticulous planning and alternative treatment approaches for successful outcomes.

Coordination Regulation Enabling Deep Eutectic Electrolyte for Fast-Charging High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries.

Adv Mater

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Processing, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 100084, China.

The safety and cycle stability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) under conditions of high cut-off voltage and fast charging put forward higher requirements for electrolytes. Here, a sulfonate-based deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) resulting from the eutectic effect between solid sultone and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide without any other additives is reported. The intermolecular coordination effect triggers this eutectic phenomenon, as evidenced with nuclear magnetic resonance, and thus the electrochemical behavior of the DEE can be controlled by jointly regulating the coordination effects of F···H and Li···O intermolecular interactions.

Purpose: The study aims to produce CAD-CAM reference samples for shade communication milled from the material of the restoration zirconia (ZrO2) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) and evaluate the color difference with the corresponding conventional Vita Classical (VC) shade tab. Furthermore, it aims to verify the color consistency of the materials.

Materials And Methods: Five-five samples were milled out of ZrO2 and ZLS in five different colors and their color parameters were compared with the corresponding VC tabs both visually and digitally.

The establishment of prognostic indicators in wildlife patients aids clinical decision-making and resource allocation. Hematological and plasma biochemical parameters were evaluated as potential prognostic indicators in wild Temminck's pangolins () rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. In this prospective cohort study, EDTA and lithium heparin blood samples were collected from the ventral coccygeal vein in 41 pangolins within 48 h of confiscation and before veterinary intervention.
