Purpose: This study investigated the effects of chronic 3-day beetroot juice (BRJ) supplementation on maximum oxygen uptake (VO), velocity associated with VO(vVO), and peak velocity (V) in recreational runners.
Methods: Thirteen male recreational runners (age 28.2 ± 3.0 years, height 176.8 ± 0.1 cm, body mass 74.4 ± 9.5 kg) performed four tests on a treadmill in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design: two maximum incremental tests to determine VO and vVO and two tests to determine V. Trials were performed following 3 days of supplementation of NO-rich BRJ in natura (8.4 mmol NO day) or BRJ NO-depleted placebo (0.01 mmol NO day), with the last dose being ingested 2 h before each test. During the tests, maximum heart rate (HR), maximal rating of perceived exertion (RPE), pre- and post-test glucose concentrations (Gluc Gluc), and peak blood lactate concentration were determined.
Results: VO was higher following BRJ vs PLA (46.6 ± 6.4 vs 45.1 ± 5.8 mL kg min; P = 0.022), as well as vVO (14.5 ± 0.8 vs 13.9 ± 1.0 km hP = 0.024) and V (15.5 ± 1.1 vs 15.2 ± 1.2 km hP = 0.038), with no differences in the other variables.
Conclusion: Consumption of NO-rich BRJ in natura (8.4 mmol NO day) once per day for 3 days improved VO, vVO and V in recreational runners without changing the other analyzed variables.

Investigating how the size of carbon support pores influences the three-phase interface of platinum (Pt) particles in fuel cells is essential for enhancing catalyst utilization. This study employed molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculation to examine the effects of mesoporous carbon support size, specifically its pore diameter, on Nafion ionomer distribution, as well as on proton and gas/liquid transport channels, and the utilization of Pt active sites. The findings show that when Pt particles are located within the pores of carbon support (Pt/PC), there is a significant enhancement in the spatial distribution of Nafion ionomer, along with a reduction in encapsulation around the Pt particles, compared to when Pt particles are positioned on the surface or in excessively large pores of the carbon support.

The lesser spiny eel, Macrognathus aculeatus (Bloch, 1786), holds substantial economic importance as a food fish in South Asia, due to its exceptional nutritional value. This study was conducted to investigate the reproductive ecology of M. aculeatus within the Gajner beel wetland ecosystem in northwestern Bangladesh, with a specific focus on size at sexual maturity, spawning season, and fecundity in relation to eco-climatic variables.

As one of the key diagnostic methods for detecting biomarkers and antigen-antibody interactions, the luminescent oxygen channel immunoassay (LOCI) has been widely applied in bioanalysis and other fields. In the context of LOCI, the performance of the prepared donor polystyrene (PS) microspheres significantly impacts the detection signal values. In this study, an attempt was made to synthesize PS microspheres via one-step polymerization of styrene with an amphiphilic monomer (PEOOH), followed by swelling the silicon phthalocyanine photosensitizer into the PS microspheres, resulting in the functionalization of the PS microspheres with polyethylene glycol segments.

The combustion efficiency and reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles, as a crucial component in solid propellants, are constrained by the inert oxide layer aluminum oxide (AlO). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can remove the oxide layer, however, carbon deposition generated during the reaction process still limits the reaction efficiency of Al/PTFE fuel. Here, a litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel with the nano-PTFE islands distributed on the Al particles surface is successfully designed, based on localized activation and synergistic reaction strategies, to solve the AlO layer and carbon deposition.
