Benzimidazoles (BZDs) are widely used veterinary drugs in the domestic food-producing animals, resulting in the metabolism of BZDs and the harmful metabolites residues in some foods. However, some BZD metabolites are unknown and so it is important to discover new metabolites to expand detection targets. For these reasons, a sensitive and selective strategy was designed to identify BZD metabolites in the serum of pigs after oral administration of albendazole, fenbendazole and thiabendazole, respectively. Nickel oxide nanoparticle-deposited silica (SiO@NiO) composite was used for the enrichment and purification of BZD compounds. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with precursor ion scan-mass spectrometry (LC-PIS-MS) and high resolution MS/MS analysis (HR-MS/MS) was employed for the BZDs metabolic profiles characterization and metabolites detection. Finally, 18 BZD metabolites were identified, among which 11 metabolites were discovered in pig serum for the first time. Besides, more comprehensive BZD metabolic pathways were presented.

Fenbendazole (FBZ), a benzymidazole (BZD) anthelmintic drug, is used for in-feed medication in pigs. BZD-containing drugs may induce cytochrome P450 isozymes (CYPs), particularly those members of the CYP1A subfamily. The current research evaluated the plasma and liver availability and metabolism of FBZ and its metabolites, oxfendazole (OFZ) and fenbendazole sulphone (FBZSO), after the administration of the parent drug in feed, and characterized the effect of the sustained administration of the anthelmintic on the catalytic activities of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes in pig liver.

Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) is a crime where the victim is unable to provide sexual consent due to incapacitation resulting from alcohol or drug consumption. Due to the large number of substances possibly used in DFSA, including illicit, prescription and over-the-counter drugs, DFSA faces many toxicological challenges. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are ideal candidates for DFSA, as they are active at low doses, have a fast onset of action and can be easily administered orally.
