FEUDAL (f's essentially unaffected, d's accommodate ligands) is a longstanding bonding model in actinide chemistry, in which metal-ligand binding uses 6d-orbitals, with the 5f remaining non-bonding. The inverse-trans-influence (ITI) is a case where the model may break down, and it has been suggested that ionic and covalent effects work synergistically in the ITI. Here, we report an experimentally grounded computational study that quantitatively explores the ITI, and in particular the structure-directing role of f-orbital covalency. Strong donor ligands generate a cis-ligand-directing electrostatic potential (ESP) at the metal centre. When f-orbital participation, via overlap-driven covalency, becomes dominant via short actinide-element distances, this ionic ESP effect is overcome, favouring a trans-ligand-directed geometry. This study contradicts the accepted ITI paradigm in that here ionic and covalent effects work against each other, and suggests a clearly non-FEUDAL, structure-directing role for the f-orbitals.

Zeolites are crystalline microporous materials constructed by corner-sharing tetrahedra (SiO and AlO), with many industrial applications as ion exchangers, adsorbents and heterogeneous catalysts. However, the presence of micropores impedes the use of zeolites in areas dealing with bulky substrates. Introducing extrinsic mesopores, that is, intercrystal/intracrystal mesopores, in zeolites is a solution to overcome the diffusion barrier.

Controlled synthesis of hierarchical flowerlike cobalt tin sulfide (SnCoS) is successfully obtained using the chelation of the biomolecule l-asparagine with cobalt-tin metal cations by a hydrothermal technique. l-asparagine plays a crucial role as an inducer and a good structure-directing activity. Subsequently, pine needle-shaped cobalt iron selenium (FeCoSe) is tightly deposited on the SnCoS surface to construct cobalt tin sulfide coated with cobalt iron selenide (FeCoSe@SnCoS) heterostructure, which has exposed more active sites and the most abundant channels for electron/ion transfer.

A new set of metal-organic frameworks was designed by functionalizing g-CN with benzoic acid and using them as structure-directing ligands during the metal-organic framework (MOF) formation. One such MOF exhibited dual emissions, both metal- and ligand-centered, enabling ratiometric sensing of the carcinogenic industrial solvent dioxane. The fabricated MOFs possessed a unique fluffy spherical morphology that enabled atomic level resolution in transmission electron microscopy-a rarity in MOFs due to the 'Knock-on' effect.

Herein, we study the London dispersion forces between organic structure directing agents (OSDAs)-here tetraalkyl-ammonium or -phosphonium molecules-and silica zeolite frameworks (FWs). We demonstrate that the interaction energy for these dispersion forces is correlated to the number of H atoms in OSDAs, irrespective of the structures of OSDAs or FWs, and of variations in charges and thermal motions. All calculations considered-DFT-D3 and BOMD undertaken by us, and molecular mechanics from an accessible database-led to the same trend.

Organic amides as solvents and structure directing agents (SDAs) are crucial for synthesizing zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). However, current research focuses only on the use of short alkyl-chain amides as solvents/SDAs. Here, we investigate the role of amides with varying alkyl-chain lengths on the structures and topologies of Zn(Im) polymorphs.
