This collaborative study was done to determine whether laboratory personnel could successfully grade raw milk for sediment content using 0.40-, 0.20-, 0.14-, and 0.10-inch-diameter sediment discs. The 0.40-inch disc presently is accepted for grading sediment in mixed bulk milk samples. Technicians in 17 separate laboratories made 1,360 determinations (80 per laboratory) or 20 determinations for each size of sediment disc. Each laboratory graded the same set of samples. Samples were graded using photoprint standards that were prepared for this study. The laboratories were evaluated on the ability of laboratory technicians to grade the various sizes of sediment discs. Technicians in 13 of the 17 laboratories graded samples showing no significant differences in their ability to grade the various sized sediment discs. Four laboratories were not consistent in their ability to grade discs and showed significant differences in agreements with the previously determined sediment level as the diameter of the disc was reduced. Based on these results, most laboratories evaluated were capable of grading sediment discs with diameters of 0.40-, 0.20-, and 0.14-inch with consistency. With properly trained personnel in the laboratories, the study indicates the 0.10-inch diameter disc also can be used effectively for grading sediment in milk.

Background: A novel supported liquid extraction approach using small polymeric nanofibrous discs was demonstrated and applied to the analysis of real river water. Nanofibrous discs were tested to extract model mixture of 9 common water contaminants 4-nitrophenol, various chlorophenols, bisphenol A, permethrin, and fenoxycarb featuring a wide range of log P values (1.9-6.

Sexual dimorphisms are generated by divergent processes, such as natural or sexual selection and niche convergence. Males and females of the lesser guitarfish, Zapteryx brevirostris, present morphological differences in their discs, and the relationships with the species biology and ecology were unrecognized. Analysing the morphometry of 201 specimens and the influence of bottom features on the frequencies of 188 specimens among life stages and sexes, we found strong evidence that gonadal maturation leads to dimorphisms on discs, validating a concavity on male pectoral fins as a secondary sexual dimorphism and rejecting the hypothesis that such dimorphisms were related to ecological pressures.

Ediacara-type macrofossils appear as early as ~575 Ma in deep-water facies of the Drook Formation of the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, and the Nadaleen Formation of Yukon and Northwest Territories, Canada. Our ability to assess whether a deep-water origination of the Ediacara biota is a genuine reflection of evolutionary succession, an artifact of an incomplete stratigraphic record, or a bathymetrically controlled biotope is limited by a lack of geochronological constraints and detailed shelf-to-slope transects of Ediacaran continental margins. The Ediacaran Rackla Group of the Wernecke Mountains, NW Canada, represents an ideal shelf-to-slope depositional system to understand the spatiotemporal and environmental context of Ediacara-type organisms' stratigraphic occurrence.

Purpose: To shorten the turnaround time for blood culture (BC) analyses, a rapid method was developed for the direct identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and multidrug resistance testing of bacteria-positive BCs.
Materials And Methods: The mixtures in BC bottles were treated with the multistep centrifugation method developed here and the conventional culture-based method. The bacterial sediment obtained after centrifugation was analyzed directly with MALDI-TOF MS and Vitek 2 Compact, and AST was performed directly with the Kirby-Bauer (K-B) disk diffusion, VITEK 2 Compact, and E-test methods.

Dehalococcoides mccartyi () and spp. () are members of the class , phylum Chloroflexi, characterized by streamlined genomes and a strict requirement for organohalogens as electron acceptors. Here, we used cryo-electron tomography to reveal morphological and ultrastructural features of strain BAV1 and " Dehalogenimonas etheniformans" strain GP cells at unprecedented resolution.
