To improve the antimicrobial property of chitosan, water-soluble chitosan modified in their quaternary ammonium groups were synthesized. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated against , , and The activities increased with increasing cationic charges and the length of the alkyl chain as follows amino-chitosan, dimethylaminoethyl-chitosan, dimethylpropyl amino-chitosan, dimethylamino-1-propyl-chitosan, diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-chitosan, and quaternized DEAE-chitosan. The modified cationic chitosans showed high antimicrobial property against -Gram-positive bacteria, but were less active towards yeast ( and and -Gram-negative bacteria. The simple structure of the Gram-positive bacteria may explain why the cationic chitosan derivatives are more active towards than yeast and . The target sites of the chitosan derivatives are assumed to be the cytoplasmic membranes of microorganisms. The antimicrobial activities were strongly dependent on the cationic charge and the molecular weight. It can be suggested that these cationic chitosan derivatives have potential as antimicrobial agents.

In this study, a novel hybrid nanostructure consisting of acid-decorated chitosan and magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles was fabricated. The acid-decorated chitosan provided a stable and biocompatible matrix for the magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles. Various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), specific surface area (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize and confirm the successful synthesis of the hybrid nanostructure.

In the present study, biopolymeric Schiff base (SB) ligands were synthesized from chitosan and isatin. Consequently, their earth abundant transition metal complexes of cobalt and copper were synthesized. All compounds were extensively characterized using FTIR and UV spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy).

Human hair keratin, a natural protein derived from human hair, has emerged prominently in the field of wound repair, showcasing its unique regenerative capabilities and extensive application potential. However, it is a challenge for the keratin to efficiently therapy the impaired wound healing, such as combined radiation-wound injury. Here, we report a keratin/chitosan (KRT/CS) film for skin repair of chronic wounds in in rats with combined radiation-wound injury.

The remediation of wastewaters contaminated with dyes (discharged mainly from industry) is very important for preserving environmental quality and human health. In this study, a new composite chitosan (CS)-based adsorbent combined with activated carbon (AC) and curcumin (Cur) (abbreviated hereafter as CS/AC@Cur) in three different ratios (12.5%, 25%, and 50%) was synthesized for the removal of anionic [reactive black 5 (RB5)] and cationic [methylene blue (MB)] dyes in single-component or binary systems.
