Published: December 1988

Long-term clinical results with Swanson silastic replacements of the basal joint of the big toe 10 to 16 years after surgery are presented. Among the 60 clinically and radiologically re-examined joints there was a striking discrepancy between subjective satisfaction and objective radiologic findings. In some cases pronounced wear of the metatarsal capitulum was seen, with synovitis of varying degrees of clinical severity. The continued use of silicone implants to replace the basal joint of the big toe can only be recommended if radiologic follow-up examinations are performed more frequently. The results of the ten-year study presented here must be taken into account in patient counselling concerning surgery.

Nothronychus graffami was a large therizinosaur represented by a single well-preserved individual from the Turonian Tropic Shale of southern Utah. It is characterized by an enlarged abdomen, small tail, and an extensively pneumatized axial skeleton, and is frequently regarded as herbivorous. Given the overall tail reduction and the development of a wide fused synsacrum with widely spaced acetabulae, it is reconstructed with an anteriorly rotated femur and a displaced resting ground reaction force anterior to the center of mass.

Enhanced grain yield and quality traits are everlasting breeding goals. It is therefore of great significance to uncover more genetic resources associated with these two important agronomic traits. Plant MYB family transcription factors play important regulatory roles in diverse biological processes.

The microglial triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is required for diverse microglia responses in neurodegeneration, including immunometabolic plasticity, phagocytosis, and survival. We previously identified that patient iPSC-derived microglia (iPS-Mg) harboring the Alzheimer's disease (AD) TREM2 hypomorph display several functional deficits linked to metabolism. To investigate whether these deficits are associated with disruptions in metabolite signaling, we generated common variant, TREM2 and TREM2 variant human iPS-Mg.

We previously reported endogenous activation of the DNA damage response (DDR) in the epidermis surrounding basal cell carcinoma resected from Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors, suggesting the presence of genomic instability (GIN) in the survivors as a late effect of radiation. Dual-color immunofluorescence (IF) analysis of TP53-binding protein-1 (53BP1) and a proliferative indicator, Ki-67, to elucidate GIN in tumor tissues revealed that abnormal 53BP1 expression is closely associated with carcinogenesis in several organs. The present study aimed to confirm the presence of radiation-induced GIN in the non-neoplastic epidermis of patients with radiation-induced skin cancer.

Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) tuberculosis (TB) is an infrequent clinical entity, especially in developed countries. The symptoms are usually non-specific, and therefore it may mimic a variety of degenerative and non-degenerative diseases, hampering the diagnosis. An interesting case of SIJ infection with psoas abscess in a 77-year-old male is presented in the current article.
