Semiconductor nanocrystalline heterostructures can be produced by the immersion of semiconductor substrates into an aqueous precursor solution, but this approach usually leads to a high density of interfacial traps. In this work, we study the effect of a chemical passivation of the substrate prior to the nanocrystalline growth. PbS nanoplatelets grown on sulfur-treated InP (001) surfaces at temperatures as low as 95 °C exhibit abrupt crystalline interfaces that allow a direct and reproducible electron transfer to the InP substrate through the nanometer-thick nanoplatelets with scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. It is in sharp contrast with the less defined interface and the hysteresis of the current-voltage characteristics found without the passivation step. Based on a tunnelling effect occurring at energies below the bandgap of PbS, we show the formation of a type II, trap-free, epitaxial heterointerface, with a quality comparable to that grown on a nonreactive InP (110) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Our scheme offers an attractive alternative to the fabrication of semiconductor heterostructures in the gas phase.
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light sources due to their efficient photoluminescence (PL) and versatile chemistry. While visible emitters are well-established, excellent (near-infrared) sources are still being pursued. We present the first comprehensive analysis of low-temperature PL from two-dimensional (2D) PbS nanoplatelets (NPLs).
Lead chalcogenide nanoplatelets (NPLs) have emerged as a promising material for devices operating in the near IR and IR spectrum region. Here, we first apply the cation exchange method to PbSe/PbS core/shell NPL synthesis. The shell growth enhances NPL colloidal and environmental stability, and passivates surface trap states, preserving the main core physical properties.
A twin-screw extruder was used to fabricate poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blends (7:3 weight ratio) and blend-based nanocomposites. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and organoclays (15A and 30B) served as the nanofiller, while maleated HDPE (PEgMA) acted as an efficient compatibilizer for the blend. In the composites, individual nanofillers were mostly localized in HDPE domains, but some fillers were also observed at PBS-HDPE interfaces.

This work aimed to study the effect of the incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets (GRA 0.5% and 1% (/)) on the matrices of biobased polymers composed of starch-based materials (B20) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) using pine rosin (RES) as a compatibilizer. Colloidal 2D semiconductor nanocrystals, the analogue of solid-state quantum wells, have attracted strong interest in material science and physics. Molar quantities of suspended quantum objects with spectrally pure absorption and emission can be synthesized. For the visible region, CdSe nanoplatelets with atomically precise thickness and tailorable emission have been (almost) perfected.
