Connectomics, the reconstruction of neuronal wiring diagrams via electron microscopy, is bringing us closer to understanding how brains organize behavior. But high-resolution imaging of the brain can do more. A new study now provides insights into how neuronal circuits develop.

Human biostasis, the preservation of a human when all other contemporary options for extension of quality life are exhausted, offers the speculative potential for survival via continuation of life in the future. While provably reversible preservation, also known as suspended animation, is not yet possible for humans, the primary justification for contemporary biostasis is the preservation of the brain, which is broadly considered the seat of memories, personality, and identity. By preserving the information contained within the brain's structures, it may be possible to resuscitate a healthy whole individual using advanced future technologies.

Connectomics enables the study of structural-functional relationships in the brain, and machine learning technologies have enabled connectome maps to be developed for individual brain tumor patients. We report our experience using connectomics to plan and guide an awake craniotomy for a tumor impinging on the language area. Preoperative connectomics imaging demonstrated proximity of the tumor to parcellations of the language area.

Objective: Term congenital heart disease (CHD) neonates display abnormalities of brain structure and maturation, which are possibly related to underlying patient factors, abnormal physiology and perioperative insults. Our primary goal was to delineate associations between clinical factors and postnatal brain microstructure in term CHD neonates using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance (MR) acquisition combined with complementary data-driven connectome and seed-based tractography quantitative analyses. Our secondary goal was to delineate associations between mild dysplastic structural brain abnormalities and connectome and seed-base tractography quantitative analyses.
