The gonads of amphibians, like other vertebrates, consist of somatic tissues, which create a specific environment essential for the differentiation of germline cells. The earliest stages of gametogenesis still remain underexplored in anuran amphibians. We propose to introduce the term "pregametogenesis" for a specific period of gonocyte proliferation and differentiation that occurs exclusively during the early stages of gonadal development.

Most eukaryotes maintain the stability of their cellular genome sizes to ensure genome transmission to offspring through sexual reproduction. However, some alter their genome size by selectively eliminating parts or increasing ploidy at specific developmental stages. This phenomenon of genome elimination or whole genome duplication occurs in animal hybrids reproducing asexually.

Gametogenesis produces gametes as a piece of genetic information transmitted to the offspring. While during sexual reproduction, progeny inherits a mix of genetic material from both parents, asexually reproducing organisms transfer a copy of maternal or paternal DNA to the progeny clonally. Parthenogenetic, gynogenetic and hybridogenetic animals have developed various mechanisms of gametogenesis, however, their inheritance is not fully understood.

Unisexual hybrids that reproduce either clonally or hemiclonally are considered to be evolutionarily short-lived as they lack the ability to reduce deleterious mutations and increase genetic diversity. Reproduction is a key feature of all organisms, yet the way in which it is achieved varies greatly across the tree of life. One striking example of this variation is the stick insect genus Bacillus, in which five different reproductive modes have been described: sex, facultative and obligate parthenogenesis, and two highly unusual reproductive modes: hybridogenesis and androgenesis. Under hybridogenesis, the entire genome from the paternal species is eliminated and replaced each generation by mating with the corresponding species.
