Smart dynamic regulation structured surfaces, inspired by nature, which can dynamically change their surface topographies under external stimuli for convertible fluidic and optical properties, have recently motivated significant interest for scientific research and industrial applications. However, there is still high demand for the development of multifunctional dynamically transformable surfaces using facile preparation strategies. In this work, a type of Janus high-aspect-ratio magnetically responsive microplates array (HAR-MMA) is readily fabricated by integrating a flexible laser scanning strategy, smart shape-memory-polymer-based soft transfer, and a simple surface treatment. By applying external magnetic field, instantaneous and reversible deformation of Janus HAR-MMA can be actuated, so surface wettability can be reversibly switched between superhydrophobic (158°) and hydrophilic (40°) states, based on which a novel magnetically responsive water droplet switch can be realized. Moreover, inspired by the biological assimilatory coloration of chameleons, dynamically color conversion can be skillfully realized by applying different colors on each side of the Janus HAR-MMA. Finally, as a proof-of-concept demonstration in light manipulation, a HAR-MMA is applied as an optical shutter actuated by external magnetic field with eximious controllability and repeatability. The developed multifunctional HAR-MMA provides a versatile platform for microfluidic, biomedical, and optical applications.

This study investigated the performance of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in the restoration of Qingling Lake and Huangjia Lake, focusing on nitrogen removal under varying water quality conditions. Significant color changes in MBGS and differences in granule characteristics were observed, with Qingling Lake demonstrating superior removal efficiencies for ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and total nitrogen compared to Huangjia Lake. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that when the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios were less than 20 mg/L and 20, respectively, assimilatory nitrate reduction was positively correlated with both, whereas denitrification was negatively correlated.

Microgreens are an excellent source of health-maintaining compounds, and the accumulation of these compounds in plant tissues may be stimulated by exogenous stimuli. While light quality effects on green basil microgreens are known, the present paper aims at improving the quality of acyanic (green) and cyanic (red) basil microgreens with different ratios of LED blue and red illumination. Growth, assimilatory and anthocyanin pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence, total phenolic, flavonoids, selected phenolic acid contents and antioxidant activity were assessed in microgreens grown for 17 days.

A genetic study is presented for traits relating to nitrogen use in wheat. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were established for 21 traits relating to growth, yield and leaf nitrogen (N) assimilation during grain fill in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using a mapping population from the cross Chinese Spring x SQ1.

A new phototrophic purple sulfur bacterium, isolated from benthic microbial mats from the White Sea littoral zone, is described. Individual cells were spherical, non-motile and lacked gas vesicles. In pure cultures cells appeared in regular platelet-like arrangements of four, eight or sixteen cells.
