Semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) have recently emerged as a new type of ultrabright fluorescent probe that has been proved to be very useful for biomedical imaging. However, Pdots often suffer from serious fluorescence aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) especially for near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent Pdots. This article compared two strategies to overcome the ACQ effect in near-infrared emissive Pdot systems: aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and anti-aggregation-caused quenching (anti-ACQ). The results show that the anti-ACQ platform outperforms the AIE system. The fluorescence quantum yield of anti-ACQ-based Pdots can be over 50% and the average per-particle brightness of the Pdots is about 5 times higher than that of the commercially available quantum dots. To help understand why the monomer conformations could greatly affect the optical properties of Pdots, molecular dynamics simulations were performed for the first time in such complicated Pdot systems. To demonstrate applications for fluorescence imaging, both microangiography imaging on living zebrafish embryos and specific tumor targeting on mice were performed. We anticipate that these studies will pave the way for the design of new highly fluorescent Pdot systems.

Revising exciton diffusion lengths in polymer dot photocatalysts.

Exciton migration in organic polymer dots (Pdots) is crucial for optimizing photocatalytic reactions at the particle surface, such as hydrogen evolution and carbon dioxide reduction. Despite the use of Pdots in photocatalysis, there is still a need for better understanding of exciton diffusion within these systems. This study investigates the exciton diffusion in PFBT Pdots stabilized with different weight percentages of the co-polymer surfactant PS-PEG-COOH and doped with perylene red as an internal quencher.

Our previous research has shown that melatonin (MLT) can reduce cryopreserved ovarian damage in mice. Yet, the molecular mechanism of MLT protection is still unclear. Some studies have shown that melatonin receptor 1 (MT1) is very important for animal reproductive system.

Article Synopsis
  • Melatonin and its derivatives are naturally produced in human skin and have various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
  • Research on melanoma cell lines showed that these compounds significantly lower the production of melanin by disrupting important signaling pathways and enzyme activity responsible for pigmentation.
  • The study also indicated that the effects of melatonin on melanin regulation occur through mechanisms that do not involve specific melatonin receptors, suggesting new avenues for treatment strategies targeting melanoma.

Melatonin alleviates lung injury in H1N1-infected mice by mast cell inactivation and cytokine storm suppression.

Influenza A virus (IAV) H1N1 infection is a constant threat to human health and it remains so due to the lack of an effective treatment. Since melatonin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecule with anti-viral action, in the present study we used melatonin to protect against H1N1 infection under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The death rate of the H1N1-infected mice was negatively associated with the nose and lung tissue local melatonin levels but not with serum melatonin concentrations.

Organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) biosensing represents a new platform interfacing optoelectronics and biological systems with essential amplification, which, nevertheless, are concentrated on depletion-type operation to date. Here, a polymer dot (Pdot)-gated accumulation-type OPECT biosensor is devised and applied for sensitive urea detection. In such a device, the as-designed Pdot/poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA) is validated as a superior gating module against the diethylenetriamine (DETA) de-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) channel, and the urea-dependent status of Pdots has been shown to be sensitively correlated with the device's response.
