Background: Care planning with people with advanced heart failure enables appropriate care, and prevents futile interventions, such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Aim: To explore what motivates clinicians to conduct, and people with heart failure and their carers, to engage in well-conducted CPR discussions.

Methods: In-depth remote interviews with i) people with heart failure and self-reported daily symptoms (≥ 3 months), ii) informal carers and, iii) clinicians recruited through social media and professional groups, team contacts and snowballing.

We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent passive optical network (PON) system that operates at 100 Gbits/s/λ. This system utilizes distributed feedback lasers (DFBs) and a carrier recovery algorithm facilitated by a bifunctional frequency-domain pilot tone (FPT). To reduce costs in coherent PON implementations, low-cost DFBs are employed as the sole light sources, replacing the more expensive external cavity lasers (ECLs) at both the optical line terminal (OLT) and the optical network units (ONUs).

Objectives: To compare the ability to perform basic life support (BLS) skills on children and infants in a moving ambulance whether or not they are properly secured to the stretcher.

Methods: Emergency Medicine Services provider ability to perform BLS skills was measured in moving ambulances on a closed course using an analog for child and infant cardiac arrest. Data were compared for child and infant manikins secured to the stretcher via different methods in simulated patient resuscitations performed by 24 participants.

Objectives: This study investigates the relationship between the cerebro-placental ratio (CPR) measured at 40+0 weeks' gestation and perinatal outcomes to determine a CPR cut-off that may justify induction of labor at term in appropriately grown fetuses (AGA). Although CPR is used for monitoring growth-restricted fetuses, its role in guiding labor induction decisions for AGA pregnancies at term remains unclear.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from 491 singleton pregnancies with intended vaginal deliveries between 2015 and 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The Avalanche Victim Resuscitation Checklist (AVRC) was created to enhance the management of avalanche victims experiencing cardiac arrest, as prior compliance with international guidelines was poor.
  • A study over ten years examined the effectiveness of the AVRC, revealing significant improvements in guideline compliance (from 59% to 95%) and complete documentation after its implementation.
  • The findings suggest that while the AVRC enhances patient management for critically buried victims, further quality improvements are needed for those buried for extended periods.
