The transfer factors (TFs) of naturally occurring radionuclides, U and Th from soil to different cassava plant compartments were calculated. Cassava is widely cultivated in Nigeria and contributes significantly to the food supply of the nation. There is sparsity of data on the TFs in Nigeria, and no TF data from any African country were included in the International Atomic Energy Agency's compilation of TFs for the tropical ecosystem. Samples of tin tailings and soil samples from virgin land were used to formulate three soil groups; group-A (soil from virgin land only), group-B (tailings only) and group-C (equal dry mass combination of tailings and soil from virgin land). Pot experiments were set up to determine the TFs of U and Th. The activity concentrations of U and Th in the dried samples of the soil and plant compartments were determined using a sodium iodide detector. The TF of U ranged from below detection limit (BDL) to 0.01 in the tuber samples, BDL to 0.23 in the stem samples and BDL to 0.90 in the leaf samples, while the TF of Th ranged between 0.006 and 0.49 for tuber samples, 0.03 and 0.65 in stem samples and 0.03 and 1.54 in the leaf samples. There were significant difference in the TF of U and Th between the soil groups. The leaf compartment generally had most of the highest TF values while the tuber samples had most of the lowest TF values for both radionuclides.

Male tephritid fruit flies typically emit pheromones from rectal glands to attract mates. Consistent with this, virgin females of the cucumber fruit fly, Zeugodacus cucumis (French), were found to be attracted to volatiles emitted by crushed male rectal glands in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Electrophysiological studies identified several male rectal gland compounds that triggered responses in female antennae.

Great efforts have been made in recent years by the scientific community and the asphalt industry in developing sustainable technologies for the production of asphalt mixtures for road paving applications, pursuing the use of ever higher quantities of recycled materials. In this regard, the challenge is to define the optimal formulation of the mixture which allows the various component materials to be synergistically combined without compromising the performance and durability of the asphalt pavement. In such a context, the experimental study described in this paper aimed to provide a contribution to research by investigating sustainable asphalt mixtures containing 50% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and polymeric compound composed of 100% recycled plastics.

Pelletizing mixed plastic wastes (MPW) has gained interest as an upcycling technology and an alternative to conventional recycling. To investigate its potential, we conducted a cost analysis and life-cycle assessment (LCA) for a conceptual pelletization facility designed to produce 1 kg of pellets per batch of MPW (comprising polyethylene-PE and polypropylene-PP). This work has the following merits: (i) evaluating environmental impact (EI), cost analysis, and mechanical strength based on actual experimental data and its comparison with local and international manufacturers; (ii) enabling the evaluation of LCA impacts of MPW pellets; and (iii) emphasizing the significance of waste management in reducing EIs.
