The production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose catalyzed by a series of transition metal chlorides (i.e. FeCl, RuCl, VCl, TiCl, MoCl and CrCl) was studied in biphasic system. RuCl was the most efficient catalyst among these transition metal chlorides for 5-HMF production, and resulted in both the highest yield of 83.3% and selectivity of 87.5% in NaCl-aqueous/butanol biphasic system. XRD analysis and FTIR spectroscopy were applied to further characterize the RuCl catalyzed cellulose slurries to reveal the catalytic reaction mechanism. Results demonstrated that RuCl enhanced the decrystallization and cleavage of COC bonds in cellulose, promoted the subsequent dehydration of glucose into 5-HMF, while suppressed the glucose retro-aldol reaction to byproduct lactic acid. In addition, with the assistance of NaCl-aqueous/butanol biphasic system, 5-HMF further degradation was limited and thusly maintained a desired 5-HMF yield. This proposed approach provides an efficient strategy for one-pot conversion of cellulose into 5-HMF.

Cadmium biphasically impacts the adaptive immune system via regulating mitochondrial activation of hematopoietic stem cells in mice.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic metal in human body, and therefore understanding the immunotoxicity of Cd is significant for public health. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in regulating the immunotoxicity of Cd. After exposure to 10 ppm Cd via drinking water for up to 9 months, C57BL/6 mice had a suppressed adaptive immune system at day 135 but had an enhanced adaptive immune system at day 270 during Cd exposure.

Propagation of Orientation Across Lengthscales in Sheared Self-Assembling Hierarchical Suspensions via Rheo-PLI-SAXS.

Simultaneous rheological, polarized light imaging, and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments (Rheo-PLI-SAXS) are developed, thereby providing unprecedented level of insight into the multiscale orientation of hierarchical systems in simple shear. Notably, it is observed that mesoscale alignment in the flow direction does not develop simultaneously across nano-micro lengthscales in sheared suspensions of rod-like chiral-nematic (meso) phase forming cellulose nanocrystals. Rather, with increasing shear rate, orientation is observed first at mesoscale and then extends to the nanoscale, with influencing factors being the aggregation state of the hierarchy and concentration.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a minimally invasive ablation technique that compromises integrity of the cell membrane through the application of short duration, high voltage electric pulses to induce cell death. Adverse effects of IRE such as muscle contractions are reduced with higher frequency biphasic pulsing, commonly known as high-frequency irreversible electroporation (H-FIRE). IRE and H-FIRE treatments have shown to increase immune activation through the induction of both immediate and delayed cell death, indicated by the release of damage-associated molecular pathways, antigens, and proteins.

Piezoionic materials have attracted considerable attention for their ability to generate iontronic signals or power in response to stress stimuli. However, the limited intrinsic transport distinction between cations and anions within most ionic materials results in weakened iontronic power conversion efficiencies under stress fields. Here, we report a piezoheterogated biphasic gel for ultrahigh iontronic generation, characterized by high-internal microphase heterointerfaces that facilitate the distinct transport of various ion species.
