Objective: Itopride, a prokinetic with dopamine D2-antagonistic and cholinesterase inhibitor properties, is used for treating functional dyspepsia (FD) patients. However, the effects of itopride on sensitivity to gastric distention and impaired gastric accommodation, major pathophysiological mechanisms of FD, are unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of itopride on gastric distention and on gastric accommodation in healthy volunteers, compared to placebo and domperidone.
Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers (6 male, mean age 28.3 ± 5.8) were studied after pretreatment for 2 days tid with placebo (P), itopride 50 mg (I50), itopride 100 mg (I100), or domperidone 10 mg (D10) in a placebo-controlled, double-blind cross-over design. A gastric barostat study was performed to assess gastric compliance, sensitivity to gastric distention, and gastric accommodation. Symptoms were evaluated by visual analogue scales and perception scores.
Results: I50, I100, and D10 did not influence gastric compliance and sensitivity compared to placebo. No significant differences in accommodation were observed after I100 compared to P. Preprandial intragastric volumes were similar with D10, I50, or placebo (respectively, 244 ± 21, 225 ± 23, and 261 ± 36 mL, NS). However, postprandial gastric volumes were lower after I50 compared to placebo (303 ± 34 vs. 448 ± 50 mL, P < 0.01). Gastric accommodation was significantly reduced after D10 (90 ± 26 mL) and I50 (78 ± 25 mL) compared to placebo (186 ± 37 mL, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01).
Conclusion: In healthy subjects, itopride and domperidone do not alter gastric compliance or sensitivity. I50 and D10 three times daily, but not I100, decrease meal-related gastric accommodation.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The dried fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge (Hawthorn in Chinese) is a traditional medicine used in China, Japan and Korea for thousands of years. Hawthorn is documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, as a folk medicine that is used to eliminate food, strengthen the stomach, move qi and dissipate blood stasis, treat stagnation of meat and food, gastric distention and fullness, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Vitexin, a flavonoid glycoside, is an important biologically active compound derived from Hawthorn, with significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Introduction And Importance: Neonatal appendicitis is a rare condition with high morbidity and mortality due to its late diagnosis in favor of more common pathologies. There are few reported cases of neonatal appendicitis and even fewer of antenatal appendicitis.
Case Presentation: We report a neonate presenting with abdominal distention and gastric emesis in the setting of a suspected congenital abdominal mass, later diagnosed with neonatal appendicitis requiring intestinal resection and anastomosis.

Objective: To describe the outcome of megaesophagus in harbor seal pups undergoing rehabilitation from January 2021 to December 2023.
Methods: 5 harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) pups, 2 males and 3 females, were included in the study. All 5 cases had no clinical signs associated with megaesophagus on initial presentation to the rehabilitation facility.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms between patients who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y (R-Y) and Billroth-II with Braun (B-II B) reconstruction.
Methods: This observational study retrospectively analyzed 151 patients (110 in R-Y group and 41 in B-II B group) who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy from January 2020 to December 2021. A comparison was made regarding surgical outcomes, perioperative nutritional and inflammatory markers, postoperative dietary patterns, and gastrointestinal symptoms between the two groups.

Three seven-year-old African clawed frogs () from an animal research facility showed weight loss, coelomic distention and an abnormal swimming gait were euthanised on welfare grounds. A complete necropsy of each animal showed a focal, firm, dark brown to green mass with multifocal haemorrhages in the left liver lobe in two animals and a transmural, firm, beige, multilobulated gastric mass in another animal. Additionally, one of the frogs with the hepatic mass had haemocoeloma.
