Weak stem mechanical strength severely restrains cut flowers quality and stem weakness can be alleviated by calcium (Ca) treatment, but the mechanisms underlying Ca-mediated enhancement of stem mechanical strength remain largely unknown. In this study, we performed a comparative transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analysis of herbaceous peony ( Pall.) inflorescence stems treated with nanometer Ca carbonate (Nano-CaCO₃). In total, 2643 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 892 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were detected between the Control and nano-CaCO₃ treatment. Among the 892 DEPs, 152 were coregulated at both the proteomic and transcriptomic levels, and 24 DEPs related to the secondary cell wall were involved in signal transduction, energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and lignin biosynthesis, most of which were upregulated after nano-CaCO₃ treatment during the development of inflorescence stems. Among these four pathways, numerous differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) related to lignin biosynthesis were identified. Furthermore, structural observations revealed the thickening of the sclerenchyma cell walls, and the main wall constitutive component lignin accumulated significantly in response to nano-CaCO₃ treatment, thereby indicating that Ca can enhance the mechanical strength of the inflorescence stems by increasing the lignin accumulation. These results provided insights into how Ca treatment enhances the mechanical strength of inflorescence stems in .

Enhancing Biophysical Muscle Fatigue Model in the Dynamic Context of Soccer.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka, Vukovarska 58, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia.

In the field of muscle fatigue models (MFMs), the prior research has demonstrated success in fitting data in specific contexts, but it falls short in addressing the diverse efforts and rapid changes in exertion typical of soccer matches. This study builds upon the existing model, aiming to enhance its applicability and robustness to dynamic demand shifts. The objective is to encapsulate the complexities of soccer dynamics with a streamlined set of parameters.

Research on the Stress Characteristics of Reuse of Semi-Rigid Base.

Sensors (Basel)

School of Highway, Chang'an University, Middle Section of South Erhuan Road, Xi'an 710064, China.

Semi-rigid bases are widely used in road construction due to their excellent properties, high rigidity, and frost resistance, and they have been in service for many years. However, as the service life increases, the maintenance demands also grow, with traditional maintenance methods still being the primary approach. Based on a typical case using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology, this study explores the issue of cracks in semi-rigid bases and their impact on overlay layers.

Smart concrete is a structural element that can combine both sensing and structural capabilities. In addition, smart concrete can monitor the curing of concrete, positively impacting design and construction approaches. In concrete, if the curing process is not well developed, the structural element may develop cracks in this early stage due to shrinkage, decreasing structural mechanical strength.

Advances in Research of Hydrogel Microneedle-Based Delivery Systems for Disease Treatment.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials, College of Biomedical Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China.

Microneedles (MNs), composed of multiple micron-scale needle-like structures attached to a base, offer a minimally invasive approach for transdermal drug delivery by penetrating the stratum corneum and delivering therapeutic agents directly to the epidermis or dermis. Hydrogel microneedles (HMNs) stand out among various MN types due to their excellent biocompatibility, high drug-loading capacity, and tunable drug-release properties. This review systematically examines the matrix materials and fabrication methods of HMN systems, highlighting advancements in natural and synthetic polymers, and explores their applications in treating conditions such as wound healing, hair loss, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

Background/objectives: This project aims to provide valuable insights into the formulation of orodispersible films (ODFs) for the delivery of PROTAC ARV-110. The primary objective of this drug delivery formulation is to enhance the solubility of PROTAC ARV-110, which faces significant challenges due to the low solubility of this active pharmaceutical ingredient, as it belongs to a molecular class that is considered to exceed the "Rule of Five".

Methods: We employed the concept of developing a rapidly disintegrating ODF to enhance the solubility of PROTAC ARV-110, utilizing polyvinyl alcohol as the polymer of choice.
