Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography is a phase-contrast imaging technique capable of retrieving three-dimensional maps of the index of refraction of the imaged volumes with nanometric resolution. Despite its unmatched reach, its application remains prerogative of a limited number of laboratories at synchrotron sources. We present a detailed description of an experimental procedure and a data analysis pipeline which can be both exploited for ptychographic X-ray computed tomography experiments at any high-brilliance X-ray source. These have been validated at the I13-1 Coherence Branchline within the first experiment of its kind to be successfully carried out on a biological sample at Diamond Light Source.

Single-shot ptychography is a quantitative phase imaging method wherein overlapping beams of light arranged in a grid pattern simultaneously illuminate a sample, allowing a full ptychographic dataset to be collected in a single shot. It is primarily used at optical wavelengths, but there is interest in using it for x-ray imaging. However, constraints imposed by x-ray optics have limited the resolution achievable to date.

Background: Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is an important lens-free imaging method. As a variant of CDI, ptychography enables the imaging of objects with arbitrary lateral sizes. However, traditional phase retrieval methods are time-consuming for ptychographic imaging of large-size objects, e.

Article Synopsis
  • Ptychography is now widely used in microscopy for greater imaging precision but is limited by the coherence of the light sources used.
  • A new universal reconstruction algorithm has been developed that works effectively even with low coherence, improving image quality without needing prior source information.
  • This algorithm enhances existing ptychographic systems, leading to faster and more stable reconstructions, especially beneficial for imaging weakly scattering samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Ptychography is a computational imaging technique that provides detailed microscopic images, relying on phase-retrieval algorithms for quality results.
  • Recent advancements have integrated deep neural networks (DNN) into phase retrieval processes to enhance imaging quality, although challenges arise from these methods being sensitive to experimental changes and the need for extensive image datasets for training.
  • A novel approach combines DNN and model-based algorithms, using a DNN denoiser with synthetic training data, which allows for improved image reconstruction with fewer iterations and greater adaptability to varying conditions, as validated by experimental results.
