Chemically fueled covalent crosslinking of polymer materials.

Published: February 2019

Transiently crosslinked dynamic polymer networks are developed, using carbodiimide hydration to link carboxylic acids as anhydrides. From aqueous polymer solutions, non-equilibrium hydrogels are transiently formed, which dissolve upon anhydride hydrolysis. The materials can be refueled using a subsequent injection of carbodiimide. The gels exhibit higher storage moduli compared to transient supramolecular gels as a result of their covalent crosslinks.

Interaction of Swine Manure Ash-Oxygen Carrier Particles under Chemical Looping Conditions.

Energy Fuels

February 2025

The interaction between biofuel ashes and the oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion (CLC) and chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) processes will be a key factor for the future implementation of these processes on an industrial scale. This is important if the biofuel used is a waste product with a high ash content, as much as 30 wt %, as is dry swine manure. The main components of swine manure ash are Ca (17 wt %) and P (13 wt %).

Transitioning the chemical industry away from fossil fuels is a critical goal that requires the adoption of alternative, non-fossil carbon feedstocks. The electrochemical CO reduction reaction, driven renewable-derived electricity, represents an unparalleled technology that uses CO as a C-building block to generate industrially relevant products. Although many electrocatalytic systems have demonstrated promising activities in producing a wide range of products, challenges remain in controlling the product selectivity and reducing the operating overpotential for large-scale applications.

The production of high-energy-density liquid fuels through the photoconversion of CO offers a highly efficient method for storing sustainable solar energy for future use. BiTiO (BTO) nanorods loaded with Cu-Pd nanoalloys were designed for the highly selective photoreduction of CO to ethyl alcohol, using HO as the proton source. A tandem synergistic catalysis mechanism was proposed for this CO photoconversion process.

Photoelectrocatalytic Cl-mediated C(sp)-H aminomethylation of hydrocarbons by BiVO photoanodes.

Interfacial photoelectrochemistry at photoanodes has been extensively researched for solar energy conversion, but its application for the production of high-value-added chemical compounds in organic chemistry still presents challenges. Herein, we report photoelectrocatalytic Cl-mediated C(sp)-H aminomethylation of alkanes with self-developed and reusable BiVO photoanodes. The swift condensation of aniline with aldehydes, along with the decrease of the electricity input of aniline by photogenerated holes in the BiVO photoanodes, work together to prevent excessive oxidation of aniline, leading to high yields of the desired product.

Efficient adsorption desulfurization via encapsulation of CeO nanoparticles in hierarchical porous HKUST-1.

Thiophene-like sulfides present in fuel oil release sulfur oxides (SO) during combustion, which pose significant risks for both environmental sustainability and public health. Adsorption desulfurization (ADS) has garnered considerable attention because of its mild operating conditions, low production costs, and minimal impact on the octane number of fuels. Metal-organic frameworks used as desulfurizing adsorbents provide several advantages, including a high specific surface area and easily adjustable structures.
