Self-doping in nanocrystals allows accessing higher quantum states. The electrons occupying the lowest energy state of the conduction band form a metastable state that is very sensitive to the electrostatic potential of the surface. Here, we demonstrate that the high charge sensitivity of the self-doped HgSe colloidal quantum dot solid can be used for sensing three different targets with different phases through self-doped HgSe nanocrystal/ZnO thin-film transistors: the environmental gases (CO gas, NO gas, and HS gas); mid-IR photon; and biothiol (l-cysteine) molecules. The self-doped quantum dot solid detects the targets through different mechanisms. The physisorption of the CO gas and the NO gas molecules, and the mid-IR photodetection show reversible processes, whereas the chemisorption of l-cysteine biothiol and HS gas molecules shows irreversible processes. Considering the quenching of mid-IR intraband photoluminescence of the HgSe colloidal quantum dot solid by the vibrational mode of the CO gas molecule, sensing the CO gas could be involved in the electronic-to-vibrational energy transfer. The target molecules are quantitatively analyzed, and the limits of detection for CO and l-cysteine are 250 ppm and 10 nM, respectively, which are comparable to the performance of commercial detectors.

A green methodology for the synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from coffee husk without the use of any toxic solvents is proposed in this work. Sonochemical exfoliation of biochar, obtained from the thermal carbonization of coffee husk (from a certified coffee seeds) at low temperature in an air-restricted atmosphere, is described as an alternative procedure for the sustainable production of CQDs. The synthesized CQDs exhibited blue fluorescence with a strong maximum emission band at 410 nm when excited at a maximum absorption wavelength of 330 nm.

Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) is a new type of graphite like nanomaterial, which exhibited well chemical stability, unique fluorescence characteristics, and excellent biocompatibility. The conventional hydrothermal synthesis of MoS2 generally requires a long-term reaction at high temperature and high pressure. Herein, we have developed a simple and fast MoS2 QDs synthesis scheme using microwave heating, and further modified the surface of MoS2 QDs using 3-aminophenylboronic acid.

Searching for new alternative to tripropylamine (TPrA) with low toxicity and high chemical stability for the tris(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium (II) (Ru(dcbpy)) based coreactant electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system is essential for widespread analytical applications. Here, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) have been discovered to significantly amplify the ECL emission and increase the ECL efficiency of Ru(dcbpy) for the first time. However, the mechanism by which NGQDs act as coreactants is not well comprehended.

Structural and photoelectric properties of p-i-n photodiodes based on GeSiSn/Si multiple quantum dots both on Si and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates were investigated. Elastic strained state of grown films was demonstrated by x-ray diffractometry. Annealing of p-i-n structures before the mesa fabrication can improve the ideality factor of current-voltage characteristics.

Immunochromatographic assays (ICAs) provide simple and rapid strategies for bacterial diagnosis but still suffer from the problems of low sensitivity and high dependency on paired antibodies. Herein, the broad-spectrum capture and detection capability of the antibody-free electropositive nanoprobe are clarified for bacteria for the first time and an ultrasensitive fluorescent ICA platform is constructed for the simultaneous diagnosis of multiple pathogens. A magnetic multilayer quantum dot nanocomposite with an amino-embedded SiO shell (MagMQD@Si) is designed to enrich bacteria from solutions effectively, offer high luminescence, and reduce background signals on test strips, thus greatly improving the sensitivity and stability of ICA technique for pathogen.
