Dermatomyositis (DM) is part of a heterogeneous group of systemic diseases called idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. As in other autoimmune connective tissue diseases (CTD), abnormalities of hematopoietic tissue and/or peripheral blood cells may develop and represent an important prognostic factor. Most common CTD associated with thrombocytopenia (TP) are systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome. DM-related TP is less frequent and may develop in the context of an underlying malignancy. Severe TP related to myositis is a very rare occurrence. We report a case of a male patient diagnosed with acute DM, debilitating muscle weakness and rapid development of severe TP.

The rapid development and deployment of mRNA and non-mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have played a pivotal role in mitigating the global pandemic. Despite their success in reducing severe disease outcomes, emerging concerns about cardiovascular complications have raised questions regarding their safety. This systematic review critically evaluates the evidence on the cardiovascular effects of COVID-19 vaccines, assessing both their protective and adverse impacts, while considering the challenges posed by the limited availability of randomized controlled trial (RCT) data on these rare adverse events.

Purpose: Patients with partial or complete DPD deficiency have decreased capacity to degrade fluorouracil and are at risk of developing toxicity, which can be even life-threatening.
Case: A 43-year-old man with moderately differentiated rectal adenocarcinoma on capecitabine presented to the emergency department with complaints of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and lower abdominal pain for several days. Laboratory findings include grade 4 neutropenia (ANC 10) and thrombocytopenia (platelets 36,000).

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease with a high fatality rate. The clinical diagnosis criteria mainly rely on white blood cell (WBC) and platelet (PLT), which, however, are of limited usage in identifying atypical SFTS. A multicenter study was performed in two hospitals from 2011 to 2023.

The Asian long-horned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, 1901, is the competent vector for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Haemaphysalis longicornis originated mainly in eastern Asia and invaded many areas like Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands, and was recently introduced to eastern parts of the USA. This species is characterized by high adaptability to a wide range of temperatures and can reproduce parthenogenically under stressful conditions.

Background: There are limited studies assessing whether prophylactic platelet transfusions prior to high-risk procedures reduce the risk of bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis.
Methods: We performed a analysis of two prior randomized clinical trials (CTRI/2017/12/010822 and CTRI/2021/05/033464), which compared thromboelastography-guided prophylactic platelet transfusion to standard-of-care (empirical prophylactic transfusion for all patients prior to the procedure) or on-demand transfusion (no prophylactic transfusions). We aimed to assess the risk of major procedure-related bleeding or mortality among patients who had received prophylactic platelet transfusions versus those who did not (on-demand transfusions).
