The Effects of Resonance Frequency Breathing on Cardiovascular System and Brain-Cardiopulmonary Interactions.

Appl Psychophysiol Biofeedback

January 2025

The Key Laboratory of Biomedical Information Engineering of Ministry of Education, School of Life Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, No.28, Xianning West Road, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710049, P. R. China.

Resonance frequency (RF) is characterized as the specific frequency at which a system, equipped with delayed self-correction or negative feedback mechanisms, exhibits maximal amplitude oscillations in response to an external stimulus of a particular frequency. Emerging evidence suggests that the cardiovascular system has an inherent RF, and that breathing at this frequency can markedly enhance health and cardiovascular function. However, the efficacy of resonance frequency breathing (RFB) and the specific responses of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and central nervous systems during RFB remain unclear.

Background: The incidence of silicosis has increased due to occupational silica exposure from artificial stone, with no treatments proven to halt or reverse the disease. Whole lung lavage (WLL) involves the instillation of fluid into the lungs to wash out silica particles and disease-causing inflammatory cells. This study aimed to determine the feasibility, safety, and possible benefit of WLL in patients with artificial stone silicosis.

Background: Cementless reverse shoulder arthroplasty has become increasingly popular because of the improved implant design, porous ingrowth surface, and surgical techniques. When avoiding the risks of cement use, a press-fit arthroplasty stem that has been implanted may not feel immediately stable, especially if the medullary canal size is in between standard stem diameters. To help surgeons improve fixation and avoid overstuffing the medullary canal, we present the matchstick autograft augmentation technique.

The influence of diabetes on sleep-derived cardiorespiratory features of the finger pulse wave signal - The population-based SCAPIS study.

Sleep Med

October 2024

Center for Sleep and Vigilance Disorders, Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden; Center for Sleep Medicine, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Study Objectives: Advanced signal processing of photoplethysmographic data enables novel analyses which may improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of dysglycemia associated with sleep disorders. We aimed to identify sleep-related pulse wave characteristics in diabetic patients compared to normoglycemic individuals, independent of cardiovascular-related comorbidities.

Methods: This cross-sectional evaluation of the population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) included overnight oximetry-derived pulse wave data from 3997 subjects (45 % males, age 50-64 years).

Introduction: Hyperpolarized Xe MRI and spectroscopy is a rapidly growing technique for assessing lung function, with applications in a wide range of obstructive, restrictive, and pulmonary vascular disease. However, normal variations in Xe measures of gas exchange across healthy subjects are not well characterized, presenting an obstacle to differentiating disease processes from the consequences of expected physiological heterogeneity. Here, we use multivariate models to evaluate the role of age, sex, and BMI in a range of commonly used Xe measures of gas exchange.
