Two new Evans-Showell-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic complexes, namely {Cu3(L1)1.5(H2O)5[Co2Mo10H4O38]}·5H2O (1), {[Cu(L2)0.5(H2O)2]2[Co2Mo10H4O38]}·6H2O (2) (L1 = N,N'-bis(2-pyrazinecarboxamide)-1,4-butane, L2 = N,N'-bis(2-pyrazinecarboxamide)-1,6-hexane), were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). In complex 1, the adjacent [Co2Mo10H4O38]6- polyoxoanions are linked by CuII ions to form a 1D Cu-[Co2Mo10H4O38]6- inorganic chain, which is further linked by ligand L1 and [Co2Mo10H4O38]6- polyoxoanions, forming a 3D metal-organic framework. In complex 2, the adjacent [Co2Mo10H4O38]6- polyoxoanions link the CuII ions to generate a 2D Cu-[Co2Mo10H4O38]6- inorganic layer, which is further connected with bidentate ligands L2 to obtain a 3D metal-organic framework. The structural diversities of compounds 1 and 2 showed that the spacer lengths of the flexible bis-pyrazine-bis-amide ligands play important roles in tuning the structures of the title complexes. Compounds 1 and 2 represent the first examples of 3D frameworks based on the Evans-Showell-type polyoxoanions and Cu-bis-pyrazine-bis-amide coordination complexes. Moreover, the ligand L1 was first successfully introduced into the POM system. The electrochemical and fluorescence properties of compounds 1 and 2 were discussed. As heterogeneous catalysts, compounds 1 and 2 have good catalytic activity for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Moreover, compound 2 has higher catalytic performance with 100% conversion and 98.0% selectivity for benzoic acid at 10 h. The difference in their catalytic performance may be mainly due to the difference of their structures. The catalysts can be recovered and reused without displaying any significant loss of activity.

Four new hybrid architectures containing a [CoMoHO] polyoxoanion, (en)[Cu(ptz)(HO)][CoMoHO]·24HO (1), (Hbim)[{Cu(bim)(HO)}{CoMoHO}]·5HO (2), H[Cu(dpdo)(HO)][{Cu(dpdo)(HO)(CHCN)}{CoMoHO}]·9HO (3), and (Hbpp)[{Cu(HO)}{NaCoMoHO}]·10HO (4), where ptz = 5-(4-pyridyl)-1H-tetrazole, en = ethylenediamine, bim = benzimidazole, dpdo = 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide, and bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, have been prepared and characterized through elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, and powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 shows a 3D host-guest framework composed of 3D Cu-ptz as the host and Evans-Showell-type polyoxoanion [CoMoHO] as the guest. Compound 2 is constructed from [CoMoHO] polyoxoanions and Cu-bim coordination complexes to form a 2D covalent layer.

Four new architectures containing [CoMoHO] polyoxoanions, (CNH)[Sr(HO)][CoMoHO]·2HO 1, (CNH)[Ba(HO)][CoMoHO]·3HO 2, (CNH)[Sr(HO)][CoMoHO]·3HO 3 and (CNH)[Ba(HO)][Ba(HO)][CoMoHO]·2HO 4 (CNH = ethylenediamine; CNH = 1,3-propanediamine) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, solid diffuse reflective spectroscopy, TG analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 obtained in the presence of ethylenediamine, are made of Evans-Showell-type anions [CoMoHO], linked by Sr or Ba cations to form 3D frameworks. To our knowledge, compound 1(2) represents the first example of 3D architecture in which the Evans-Showell anions [CoMoHO] were linked by pure alkaline earth cations.

Six new hybrid compounds based on [Co2Mo10H4O38](6-) polyoxoanion, (4-H2pya)6Co2Mo10H4O38·10H2O 1 (4-Hpya =3-(4-pyridyl)acrylic acid) and (4-H2pya)4[M(H2O)6][Co2Mo10H4O38]·5H2O (M = Co 2, Ni 3, Cu 4, Zn 5, Cd 6), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, TG analysis, solid diffuse reflective spectrum, powder X-ray diffraction, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P-1, which is built up of protonated 4-H2pya molecules and isolated [Co2Mo10H4O38](6-) polyoxoanions. Isostructural compounds 2-6 crystallize in the chiral space group P1 by spontaneous resolution, as a conglomerate of two enantiomerically pure crystals, which were obtained by adding different metal cations to the reaction system of compound 1.
