Published: April 2019

Background: Fathers' experience of childbirth has been described as both distressing and wonderful, but little has been described in the literature about fathers´ reactions when their partners get life threatening diagnoses such as peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) during the peripartum period.

Aim: To learn more about fathers' reactions over their partner's diagnosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy.

Methods: Fourteen fathers, whose partner was diagnosed with PPCM before or after giving birth, were interviewed. Data were analysed using inductive content analysis technique.

Results: The first reaction in fathers was shock when they heard their partner had PPCM, which was sudden, terrible and overwhelming news. Their reactions to trauma are described in the main category: The appalling diagnosis gave a new perspective on life with emotional sub-categories: overwhelmed by fear, distressing uncertainty in the situation and for the future, feeling helpless but have to be strong, disappointment and frustration, and relief and acceptance. Although terrified, fathers expressed gratitude towards health care professionals for the diagnosis that made it possible to initiate adequate treatment.

Conclusion: Exploring father's reactions will help peripartum and cardiology healthcare professionals to understand that emotional support for fathers is equally important as the support required for mothers during the peripartum period. Specifically they will help professionals to focus on future efforts in understanding and meeting the supportive care needs of fathers when their partner suffers from a life-threatening diagnosis like PPCM.

Introduction: Usually, patients with sY84 or sY86 deficiency present with azoospermia, but recent studies have shown that some males with partial AZFa deletions, including sY84 or sY86, exhibit normal fertility. Here, we reported a rare case of AZF deletion in a family, where both father and son exhibited a deletion at the sY86 site in the AZFa region and a partial deletion in the AZFc region.

Methods And Results: Detection was performed using classical multiplex polymerase chain reaction and the "Male AZF Full-region Detection" Panel, revealing specific deletions in AZFa: Yq11.

Introduction: Newborn screening (NBS) programs for a defined set of eligible diseases have been enormously successful, but genomic NBS allowing for detection of additional treatable disorders has not been broadly implemented. All 3 types of primary hyperoxaluria (PH1-3) are rare autosomal recessive diseases caused by distinct defects of glyoxylate metabolism that are diagnosed genetically with certainty. Early diagnosis and treatment are mandatory to avoid renal failure or sequalae associated with persistent hyperoxaluria.

BMC Med Educ

January 2025

Department of Radiology and Tianjin Key Lab of Functional Imaging and Tianjin Institute of Radiology and State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Youth living with HIV (YLWH) have high rates of virologic failure due to medication non-adherence. is a novel, gamified mobile health (mHealth) application designed with user-centered principles to improve medication adherence by integrating medication reminders with social and financial incentives, virtual peer social support and early clinic outreach for non-adherent YLWH in Nigeria. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted to identify reactions to key prototype features (user interface, medication reminders, incentives, and peer support), facilitators and barriers to app use, and how well the app would meet adherence needs.
