The wavefront quality of white-light supercontinuum is crucial for applications like waveform synthesis or imaging. It has been here generated by 1030 nm centered sub-picosecond pulses in YAG and characterized with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor across different parts of the spectrum. It shows a good wavefront quality of λ/11 and little dependence on the wavelength of the supercontinuum. The wavefront deformations are transferred from the driver laser wavefront to the supercontinuum independently of the wavelength.

Article Synopsis
  • Efficient supercontinuum (SC) generation requires high peak powers and, at multi-kilohertz repetition rates, often suffers from instability due to thermal effects of the materials used.
  • This research uses water's unique dispersion properties and a controlled laminar flow to enhance SC stability and maximize spectral width, achieving successful operation at 50 kHz and 100 kHz repetition rates.
  • The new water-based SC system outperforms traditional materials like YAG and sapphire, achieving a spectral bandwidth increase of 60% and 40% respectively, and shows promise for using other liquids for even broader SC generation.

ConspectusUltrafast spectroscopy and imaging have become tools utilized by a broad range of scientists involved in materials, energy, biological, and chemical sciences. Commercialization of ultrafast spectrometers including transient absorption spectrometers, vibrational sum frequency generation spectrometers, and even multidimensional spectrometers have put these advanced spectroscopy measurements into the hands of practitioners originally outside the field of ultrafast spectroscopy. There is now a technology shift occurring in ultrafast spectroscopy, made possible by new Yb-based lasers, that is opening exciting new experiments in the chemical and physical sciences.

The orbital angular momentum is a fundamental degree of freedom of light wavefronts, currently exploited in applications where information capacity is a key requirement, such as optical communication, super-resolution imaging and high-dimensional quantum computing. However, generating orbital angular momentum beams requires spatio-temporally coherent light sources (lasers or supercontinuum sources), because incoherent light would smear out the doughnut features of orbital angular momentum beams, forming polychromatic or obscured orbital angular momentum beams instead. Here we show generation of coloured orbital angular momentum beams using incoherent white light.
