Filiform corrosion produces long and narrow trails on various coated metals through the detachment of the coating layer from the substrate. In this work, we present a combined experimental and theoretical analysis of this process with the aim to describe quantitatively the shape of the cross-section, perpendicular to the direction of propagation, of the filaments produced. For this purpose, we introduce a delamination model of filiform corrosion dynamics and show its compatibility with experimental data where the coating thickness has been varied systematically.

This paper describes the synthesis and use of multifunctional methacrylic monomers, which contain basic (amine) functional groups, including an example in which an acid-labile -butylcarbamate-protected glycine is used to form a novel methacrylic monomer. The "protected" amino acid-derived functional monomer (BOC-Gly-MA) is copolymerized with an epoxide functional methacrylic monomer (GMA), to deliver novel multifunctional polymers, which are processed into powder coatings and used to study filiform corrosion at the surface of an aluminum substrate. The BOC-Gly-MA-containing copolymers were shown to improve a coating's anticorrosion performance, presenting the lowest average filiform corrosion (FFC) track length, total FFC number, and total corroded surface area (CSA) of the coatings investigated.

In this work, we have developed a unique in situ multimodal corrosion system that is capable of acquiring electrochemical data, sample imaging/visualization and hydrogen collection, simultaneously. Each of these modalities yield valuable information pertaining to the ongoing corrosion process. Combining them can yield holistic information on the role of microstructure, processing history, presence of coatings, etc.

Filiform corrosion (FFC) is characteristic of metals such as aluminium and magnesium, usually takes place on coated metals, and spreads from coating defects in the form of filaments with a width on the order of 100 μm. In this work, and Raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy were used to characterize the composition and distribution of corrosion products inside growing filaments. The filament head contains water (OH stretching modes, 3000-3600 cm), and corrosion products based on aluminium oxide with both tetrahedrally (840 cm) and octahedrally (600 cm) coordinated Al, and with some hydroxyl group content (3075, 1420, 1164 cm).
