Tunable Fano-like resonances are demonstrated numerically in a single Fabry-Perot resonator made of a bent single-mode waveguide. The resonances are shown to arise from the strong coupling between the fundamental mode of the core and a whispering gallery mode of the cladding. The tuning is realized by changing the bend radius of the waveguide. The influence of all major parameters of the resonator on its transmission and reflection spectra is illustrated and discussed. We believe that the presented results open up a new degree of freedom in designing bent waveguide-based refractometers, as well as other photonics elements utilizing cladding modes in bent single-mode waveguides.

A multi-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser can generate different wavelengths from a single laser cavity, offering potential as a dual-frequency comb and serving as an ideal light source for terahertz wave generation. We present an optimized hybrid mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser with flexible outputs: switchable and tunable dual-wavelength mode-locking, along with stable tri-wavelength mode-locking, which is achieved by introducing 0.69 m polarization-maintaining fiber and bent 200 m single-mode fiber to enhance intra-cavity birefringence and nonlinear effect to optimize the hybrid mode-locking effect, that is, build the composite filter effect.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a U-shaped fiber configuration designed for micro-displacement sensing, utilizing both multimode interference (MMI) and Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) effects to improve sensitivity and mode dispersion.
  • Experimental results demonstrate that as the radius of the fiber decreases, a redshift occurs in the spectrum, indicating a strong correlation between wavelength change and displacement.
  • The U-shaped SMS fiber structure achieves an average micro-displacement sensitivity of 5.41 pm/μm, with a maximum sensitivity of 34.46 pm/μm, highlighting its potential for practical applications in displacement sensing.

We report the nanofabrication and characterization of optical spot-size converter couplers based on curved GaAs cantilever waveguides. Using the stress mismatch between the GaAs substrate and deposited Cr-Ni-Au strips, single-mode waveguides can be bent out-of-plane in a controllable manner. A stable and vertical orientation of the out-coupler is achieved by locking the spot-size converter at a fixed 90 angle via short-range forces.

A highly sensitive temperature and refractive index (RI) sensor based on no-core fiber (NCF) cascaded with a balloon-shaped bent single-mode fiber (BSBSF) is proposed and demonstrated. The NCF can excite higher-order modes which will be concentrated and transmitted into the BSBSF due to the characteristic of self-imaging effect. The BSBSF has an excellent temperature performance due to the high thermo-optical coefficient and thermal expansion coefficient of the polymer coating.

Design of Single-Mode Single-Polarization Large-Mode-Area Multicore Fibers.

Micromachines (Basel)

School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Adelaide, Adelaide 5001, Australia.

In laser science and industry, considerable effort is directed toward designing fibers for fiber laser and fiber amplifier applications, each of which offers a particular advantage over the others. Evanescently coupled multicore fibers, however, have been studied less extensively due to the relatively small mode area in the single-mode regime. Here, by proposing a new structure with stress-applying parts in a 37-core fiber and optimizing this structure through a comprehensive framework, we present 21 solutions characterized by large-mode-area and high beam quality in the single-mode, single-polarization regime.
