A novel colorimetric sensor has been proposed for sensitive and accurate detection of iodine forms using polymethacrylate matrix, which also has the outlook for use with samples without pre-treatment and is suitable to fit in a portable instrument for in situ iodine analysis. This determination method is based on interaction of polymethacrylate matrix with iodine forms followed by measurement of absorbance at 370 nm. The principle of this colorimetric sensor is not ordinary colorimetry, but a new colorimetric strategy that combines solid phase extraction and spectrophotometric determination of a target substance following completion of the color change processes. This method ensures determination of 0.05-80.0 µg·g of iodine with the detection limit of 0.02 µg·g. The testing results show that this polymethacrylate matrix can be used for determination of iodine in solutions, food grade salt and iodinated mineral water.

Context: In the context of biomaterials, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) is a widely used monomer in dental resins due to its favorable mechanical properties and ease of polymerization. However, improving its structural stability and enhancing its performance in biological applications remain crucial goals. This study examines the impact of incorporating gold (Au) nanoparticles into the TEGDMA matrix, focusing on their potential to improve mechanical, thermal, and optical properties for biomedical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the use of cardanol trimethacrylate monomer (CTMA), sourced from cashew nut shell liquid, as an alternative to Bis-GMA in acrylic resins, focusing on the impact on the material's physicochemical and mechanical characteristics.
  • Experimental resin composites were created by replacing varying amounts of Bis-GMA with CTMA, and their properties were assessed using various analyses, revealing that CTMA-based composites exhibited similar strength and conversion rates to traditional Bis-GMA composites.
  • The findings suggest that CTMA not only maintains mechanical properties but also reduces viscosity, water sorption, and solubility, making it a promising option for dental applications and potentially decreasing BPA exposure.

Background: The pre-polymerization temperature of resin composite restorative materials could influence their adaptation to cavity details. As a current debate is existing about the refrigeration of resin composite restorative materials, this study was designed to assess the effect of refrigeration of 3 types of resin composite restorative materials with different matrix systems on their marginal adaptation in Class II restorations.

Methods: Forty-two sound maxillary molars, each with two separated Class II cavities, were used in this study.

Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba, Departamento de Odontologia Restauradora, Piracicaba, SP, Brasil.

Objective: this study sought to evaluate the effect of isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) as a diluent monomer on the physicochemical properties of experimental flowable resin composites.

Methodology: the organic resin matrix of a modal flowable resin composite was formulated with 50 wt.% of bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) and 50 wt.

College of Chemistry and Materials Science, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Coordination Chemistry, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510632, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involves using poly(methacrylic acid)-block-poly(benzyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer nano-objects and small calcium phosphate oligomers as dual fillers in a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose matrix.
  • * The resulting composite films show impressive mechanical properties with strength up to 202.5 MPa and toughness reaching 62.3 MJ/m, outperforming many conventional polymers and nanocomposites due to the strong interactions at the polymer-inorganic interfaces.
