A predominant feature of intestinal inflammation is the accumulation of neutrophils, which dictates a fine balance between epithelial repair or progression to chronic inflammation. While the processes of mucosal healing are well studied, how neutrophils advance an inflammatory insult towards epithelial neoplasia is less understood. In this issue of the JCI, Butin-Israeli et al. outline a mechanism whereby neutrophils control epithelial fitness and genomic instability via delivery of miR-23a-and miR-155-containing microparticles. Localized delivery of antisense oligonucleotides targeting miR-23a and miR-155 reversed this genomic instability and accelerated mucosal healing. This mechanism of neutrophil-derived microRNA shuttling opens up new therapeutic potential to enhance epithelial healing and limit mucosal injury.

Purpose: The albumin to fibrinogen ratio (AFR), a biomarker associated with inflammatory, nutritional, and coagulation status, and the CALLY index, a biomarker combining C-reactive protein, albumin, and lymphocyte count, have been suggested to correlate with prognosis in a variety of diseases in previous studies; however, studies of these two markers in ulcerative colitis (UC) are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of AFR and CALLY index in UC.
Methods: The study included 109 UC patients and 126 healthy controls.

The healing of lower eyelid injuries can lead to anatomical distortion and compromise the function of multiple periocular structures. To restore eyelid function and aesthetics, it is crucial to establish an accurate diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment to the affected structures. The presented case describes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a lower eyelid symblepharon, which can be easily misdiagnosed as other scarring sequelae.

Background: To minimize the risk of impaired osseointegration historically, it has been recommended to insert the implant into the bone (submerged implants) and to allow for submerged healing of 3-6 months in the lower and upper jaw, this conventional technique is advocated. The concept of nonsubmerged healing was introduced in 1988 in which gingival former was placed at the time of implant placement instead of cover screw. The treatment concept of nonsubmerged implant placement enables early implant loading, one surgical procedure only, and a reduced treatment period for the patients.

The main target of treatment in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease is to achieve a complete so-called mucosal healing. Various definitions of mucosal healing are available in literature, and the most recent ones include a combination of endoscopic and histological remission. However, the assessment of a complete histological remission is not always univocal.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: TongXieYaoFang (TXYF), a classical formula used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is renowned for its efficacy in treating chronic abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Modern research suggests that fundamental relief from these symptoms depends on complete intestinal mucosal healing, which normalises gut secretory functions. Consensus between traditional and modern medical theories indicates that TXYF is particularly suitable for treating the remission phase of ulcerative colitis (UC).
