Aims: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using cryoballoon has been accepted as a safe and effective method for treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Despite advances in catheter-based technologies, some patients still experience AF recurrence. In this study, we aimed to compare left atrial appendage (LAA) morphology in AF patients and subjects with sinus rhythm and also investigate the association between LAA morphology and success of PVI using cryoballoon in subjects with AF.

Methods: In this prospective study, 359 AF patients who underwent pre-ablation computed tomographic angiography (CTA) scan between January 2013-March 2016 were included as the patient group. 100 age and gender-matched subjects in sinus rhythm who had no AF episodes in 24-h Holter monitoring that underwent CTA were included as the control group.

Results: Non-chicken wing LAA morphology was more common in AF patients (p < 0.001). LAA was significantly deeper (p < 0.001) and short-axis diameter of LAA orifice and LAA orifice area were significantly larger (p < 0.001) in AF patients. Low take-off type morphology of LAA was more common in controls compared to AF patients (p = 0.006). At a median follow-up of 37 months, only longitudinal-axis left atrial diameter on CT (p = 0.003) and cauliflower-type LAA morphology (p = 0.004) were independent predictors of AF recurrence.

Conclusion: This is the first study in the literature that investigates the relationship between anatomical variations of LAA and AF recurrence following cryoablation. Our findings demonstrate that cauliflower-type LAA morphology is associated with two-fold increased risk of AF recurrence.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart arrhythmia, linked to a five-fold increase in stroke risk. The left atrial appendage (LAA), prone to blood stasis, is a common thrombus formation site in AF patients. The LAA can be classified into four morphologies: broccoli, cactus, chicken wing and windsock.

Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate whether the morphology of the acromion and the inclination of the glenoid are associated with the risk of supraspinatus (SSP) tendon ruptures. Materials and methods A total of 106 patients were enrolled in this study between August 2012 and February 2014, including 55 symptomatic patients with an SSP tendon rupture (ruptured group) and 51 patients with an intact SSP (control group). MRI of the shoulder was performed for all patients in both groups.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Sport Medicine Center, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, 107 Yan Jiang Road West, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, 510120, People's Republic of China.

Background: Previous research has established connections between the acromion index (AI), critical shoulder angle (CSA), acromiohumeral distance (AHD), and lateral acromion angle (LAA) with the incidence of rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Despite numerous international studies exploring the variability of shoulder joint morphology and parameters, research incorporating these parameters has yet to be conducted in Somalia. This study aims to analyze and describe the radiological parameters of acromion morphology in the Somali populations.

To investigate whether we can rule out the left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) using different scanning protocol by Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CCT). We retrospectively reviewed the CCT images of 138 patients with AF to assess LAA thrombus. Patients with no thrombosis diagnosed by preoperative CCT should be confirmed using intraoperative findings as the reference standard.

Identifying left atrium and left atrial appendage prone to thrombus formation in patients with atrial fibrillation using statistical shape modeling.

Background: The morphology of the left atrium (LA) and left atrial appendage (LAA) is associated with LAA thrombus formation (LAAT) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Statistical shape modeling (SSM) could be a comprehensive and objective method for evaluating LA/LAA shape, thereby improving LAAT risk assessment.

Methods And Results: In this individual-matched case-control study, 110 pairs of AF patients with or without LAAT were compared.
