Background/aims: The ewe is increasingly being used as an animal model for pelvic floor disorders. The aim was to further characterize changes in the vaginal properties during its entire lifespan.

Methods: Vaginal tissues were collected at different stages of reproductive life (neonatal, prepubescence, nulliparous, primiparous, multiparous, and menopausal; ≥6 ewes/group). Vaginal size, as well as active and passive biomechanics, was measured. Microscopy included thickness of glycogen, epithelium, lamina propria and muscularis thickness, densities of collagen, elastin, smooth muscle, and nerves.

Results: Vaginal dimensions increase during adolescence, peak at reproductive levels, and decrease sharply after ovariectomy. One year after first delivery, the distal vagina gets more compliant, yet this is reversed later in life. The thickness of glycogen staining epithelial layers changed with puberty and menopause. The epithelium was markedly thicker after multiple deliveries. The thickness of lamina propria and muscularis increased in puberty and in nulliparous. Semi-quantitative collagen assessment demonstrated a lower collagen and higher elastin content after first and multiple deliveries.

Conclusion: The changes in the ovine vaginal wall during representative moments of her lifespan parallel those observed in women.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of porcine pancreatic enzymes (Creon pancrelipase) in comparison to microbial-derived alpha amylase (MD amylase) on the small intestine wall structure, mucosal glycogen accumulation, and enterocyte turnover. The impact of enzyme supplementation on the small intestine was explored in 18 pigs with surgically induced exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Four healthy pigs served as the control group.

Integrated multi-approaches reveal unique metabolic mechanisms of Vestimentifera to adapt to deep sea.

November 2024

CAS and Shandong Province Key Laboratory of Experimental Marine Biology, Center for Ocean Mega-Science, Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao, 266071, China.

Background: Vestimentiferan tubeworms are deep-sea colonizers, in which chemoautotrophic symbiosis was first observed. These animals are gutless and depend on endosymbiotic bacteria for organic compound synthesis and nutrition supply. Taxonomically, vestimentiferans belong to Siboglinidae and Annelida.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how alcohol intake before and during early pregnancy affects placental development in female mice.
  • Mice exposed to 10% ethanol showed a higher fetal/placental weight ratio and thinner placentas, indicating abnormal growth compared to control mice.
  • There were significant changes in the structure of the placenta along with increased AQP3 expression, linking alcohol consumption to placental dysfunction during organ development.

Introduction: The lung is a moderately radio-sensitive organ. When cells are damaged due to accidental radiation exposure or treatment, they release molecules that lead to the recruitment of immune cells, accumulating inflammatory cytokines at the site of damage. Apigenin (Api) is a natural flavonoid known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Electronic address:

Background: Danon disease (DD) is a rare X-linked dominant lysosomal storage disorder. Studies on DD pediatric patients are limited owing to the small number of cases and challenges in early detection.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed clinical and genetic data of 29 pediatric patients who visited our hospital for treatment or genetic counselling for DD from July 2014 to December 2023.
