Studies in humans and rodents show exercise in pregnancy can modulate maternal blood pressure, vascular volume, and placental efficiency, but whether exercise affects early uteroplacental vascular adaptations is unknown. To investigate this, CBA/J female mice mated with BALB/c males to generate healthy uncomplicated pregnancies (BALB/c-mated) or mated with DBA/2J males to generate abortion-prone pregnancies (DBA/2J-mated), were subjected to treadmill exercise (5 days/week, 10 m/min, 30 min/day for 6 weeks before and throughout pregnancy), or remained sedentary. In uncomplicated pregnancies, exercise caused symmetric fetal growth restriction in fetuses evidenced by reductions in fetal weight, crown-to-rump length, abdominal girth and biparietal diameter.

Hypoxia triggers blood-brain barrier disruption and a strong microglial activation response around leaky cerebral blood vessels. These events are greatly amplified in aged mice which is translationally relevant because aged patients are far more likely to suffer hypoxic events from heart or lung disease, and because of the pathogenic role of blood-brain barrier breakdown in vascular dementia. Importantly, it is currently unclear if disrupted cerebral blood vessels spontaneously repair and if they do, whether surrounding microglia deactivates.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between spontaneous echocardiographic contrast (SEC) and left atrial (LA) parameters such as size, volume, and function in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Cats were assigned into following groups: clinically healthy cats (n=8), HCM without SEC (n=12), and HCM with SEC (n=8). Left atrial shortening fraction (LAFS%) and left atrial fractional area change (LAFAC) had statistical significance between groups.

Spontaneous liver bleeding is a rare but life-threatening complication of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The optimal management strategy for this condition remains a topic of ongoing debate. We present the case of a 74-year-old man with cirrhosis and hemorrhagic shock resulting from the spontaneous rupture of HCC.
