The analytical reliability of the immunoenzyme methods for determination of the thyroid hormones thyroxin, triiodothyronine, thyroid-binding globulin, thyrotropic hormone and the thyroid-binding capacity was examined by the peroxidase activity of the marker enzyme of "Specol-11" 28 healthy controls, 28 patients with subcompensated insulin-dependent diabetes with mean duration of 8.4 years and 11 patients with hypogonadism were examined. In the diabetic patients were found changes in their thyroid state characteristic for hypothyroidism--increased thyroxin and a decrease of the thyroid-stimulating hormone with a lowered level of the binding proteins. The patients with hypogonadism showed changes mainly in the binding proteins level, a decrease of the thyroid-binding capacity with 70%. The results reveal interrelations between the thyroid gland hormonal state and other hormonal disorders.

The mechanisms involved in thyroid homeostasis are complex, and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been indicated to interfere at several levels in this endocrine system. Disruption of the maternal thyroid homeostasis during early pregnancy is of particular concern, where subclinical changes in maternal thyroid hormones (THs) may affect embryonic and foetal development. The present study investigated associations between THs, thyroid binding proteins (TH-BPs) and PFAS concentrations in pregnant women from Northern Norway.

Methods: In a prospective observational study of 91 DM1 women with singleton pregnancies, anti-TPO, anti-thyroglobulin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and free thyroxine index (T4/thyroid binding capacity) were measured in each trimester. At each visit, HbA1c, body mass index, and units of insulin per kilogram were recorded, as were complications and pregnancy outcome.

It has been noted that hypothyroidism in pregnant women can adversely affect the children's subsequent psychoneurotic development. Also, transient elevation of serum free thyroxine is occasionally seen in the first trimester of normal pregnancy. However, normal thyroid function during pregnancy and the puerperal period has not been clearly defined in Japan.

The current study is an attempt to elucidate the link between glutathione (GSH) as a major endogenous antioxidant and the thyroid hormone levels. Rats were treated with a single intraperitoneal (IP) dose of either ZnCl2 (5 mg/kg) or allyl alcohol (AIAI) (1.5 mmol/kg), which acts as a GSH-depleting agent.

In addition, there was a drastic decline in the binding capacity of estradiol- and testosterone-binding globulins in the blood plasma. The endemic thyroid gland swelling is supposed to be due to sexual malfunction in teenagers.
