Reactive astrogliosis and acidosis, common features of epileptogenic lesions, express a high level of astrocytic acid-sensing ion channel-1a (ASIC1a), a proton-gated cation channel and key mediator of responses to neuronal injury. This study investigates the role of astrocytic ASIC1a in cognitive impairment following epilepsy. Status epilepticus (SE) in C57/BL6 mice was induced using lithium-pilocarpine; the impact of ASIC1a on astrocytes was assessed using rAAV-ASIC1a-NC and rAAV-ASIC1a-shRNA, injected in the CA3 region of mice.

Introduction: This study investigated low-density scalp electrical source imaging of the ictal onset zone and interictal spike ripple high-frequency oscillation networks using source coherence maps in the pediatric epilepsy surgical workup. Intracranial monitoring, the gold standard for determining epileptogenic zones, has limited spatial sampling. Source coherence analysis presents a promising new non-invasive technique.

Early detection of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) using brain MRI in young children presenting with drug-resistant epilepsy may facilitate prompt surgical treatment, resulting in better control of seizures and decreased associated cognitive difficulties. Characteristics of FCD described in the literature are predominantly based on MRI findings in a fully myelinated brain; therefore, changes occurring during early brain maturation are not well known. In this case report, we describe distinct MRI features of a FCD visualized best before completion of myelination of the cortex and subcortical white matter.

Objectives: Resective surgery in drug-resistant focal epilepsy (DRFE) requires extensive evaluation to localize the epileptogenic zone (EZ). When non-invasive phase 1 assessments (electroencephalography, EEG; magnetic resonance imaging, MRI; and F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography, [F]FDG-PET) are inconclusive for EZ localization, invasive investigations such as stereo-EEG (SEEG) are necessary. Epileptogenicity maps (Ems) visualize the EZ using SEEG-identified ictal high-frequency oscillations (iHFOs).
